Alrighty, he can’t kill the Bluecoat Musketeer without either using Calamandra OR Rampant Growth/Forest’s Favor or some other buff. I’m banking really hard on him not having like Spirit of the Panda in his hand. If I’m right, the Newsman blocks the two basic spells and that keeps Onimaru safe for the moment. We’ll see how everything pans out next turn. I think I’m in a bad spot.

I guess it’s time to play ALL of my units?! I think we need the Traffic Director to force resource expenditure in order to “protect” the Building Inspector and the Reputable Newsman. The Building Inspector helps force him to spend his money while the Newsman is protecting the Aven and gives me a lot of aggressive potential. I think the Newsman is the bigger pain so I suspect he’ll grant Calamandra stealth to get rid of that so that he can cast Rampant Growth on the Aven, which I assume is in his next hand because there’s no reason for him not to have cast it this turn if he could have.

Yes of course we can, I think the difference is clear with units but tokens muddy the waters a bit so we can talk about some different cases to make sense of it (e.g. Prynn maxband)

I considered a different option, but I wasn’t certain how the rules work so I abandoned it, but I’ll ask here. If my maxband Quince had an available mirror illusion and then Mind Controlled a Blooming Ancient, could his maxband make a copy of it? Presuming a Blooming Ancient is in his hand, he’ll have to spend the runes to deal with the Spectral Flagbearer and pay extra to take care of both. This nets me a card and limits what else he can play.

As I understand it, “Arrives” means “enters play from somewhere not in play” so that trigger never happens with Mind Control and therefore Quince can’t make a mirror copy. Good question though, the subtleties of these things aren’t always very clear in codex.
