I personally hate the Rook matchup as Ven so I went with him here. If that had failed I would have gone Midori which I think is actually even worse for Ven but I’m much better with Rook than Mid so I decided to start with the rock man and see where that took me. Game two was pretty damn close because of King loops but the other two were well under my control all game pretty much. Sad to have to do it another Ven, but that’s the way it goes.

Flagstone, Round 7

variable vs. @SouthpawHare!

Quince > Gloria: The Consent of the Governed compels the healer to change her course in life and assist Flagstone’s noble deeds abroad & at home.

Quince < Zane: Anarchy reigned, almost, and only a few stood behind Quince in those last days… It was a somber time for some and a wild time for others!! When it doubt, double-check to make sure you don’t let anyone through the cracks…! Zane being a nonbeliever in Flagstone’s merit is not at all surprising, but he was not supposed to be this much of a threat…

Grave > Zane: I like TPoS. :smiley:

Grave < Geiger: I alllllllllllllmost made the one-life comeback! Had the dodge at the end & everything, but hoped that maybe Southpaw would reach out & try to stop me from jumping around avoiding Cycloid Revolutions wherever I could! Didn’t have lethal off the dodge at the end, so it still wouldn’t have been easy! :o

Grave > Geiger: Southpaw surprised me by going super-aggro Geiger this game. I dreamed that maybe he’d be as vulnerable as he appeared, but all was a ruse to me. After taking some lumps and a few bumps I managed to survive long enough to land a final True-Spark Arc to close the deal! Geiger’s funding was quite low at the time and that’s likely the only reason a such things were possible! Still, it alllllllllllllmost worked!

variable wins, 3-2!

I’m really glad I was able to win this one, especially against such an opponent!! ^^

ggs, Southpaw, and good luck with the rest of your IYL matches! It’s always fun to play you! You are hard to read, and you made many good reads - especially against Quince and with Geiger! I hope we can play again sometime and, also, it’d be cool to see how good you are in Smash Ultimate at some point! I haven’t practiced enough so I might just get crushed, but I’ll definitely be able to learn a few things at least!

Also, all the best with your cooking and your Animal Crossing island. I hope everything is coming together well! :smiley_cat:

Ginorm 3-0

Yes, I’m a dirty Zane player. WIth how close things are in the division I couldn’t risk starting Midori, so I covered the options and now I need to take a shower. Pretty standard Zane stuff, followed by a couple of games where Sets hands did not cooperate. I did get cheeky in Game 2 powering up for all 4 Aces and then next turn playing it right away for the win but it was Blocked. Otherwise no Anarchy to be had.

GGs @JHSnacks, good luck the rest of the way. Great chatting with you the last couple nights! Good luck with @Fluffiness. Just don’t make 'em mad. I have to play them next.

Gingi wins!

:rook::pschip::psfist::degrey:
DeGrey took early game but I made a nice comeback and had a life lead going into late game. I got a little too overzealous though and AA’d into A dodge MEGA COMBO that took me out. I got the runner up prize of Stonewalling a Queen though, as well as a consolidation card pack.
:grave::psfist::pschip: :degrey:
Grave threw a lot and dumped his hand into doing as much damage as possible. Late game saw 3 Ks from DeGrey in a row, but most got blocked and I pulled off a win.
:grave::psfist::pschip: :menelker:
:grave::psfist::pschip: :menelker:
I controlled both of these matches with consistent reads. 2nd match saw a big range switch by Menelker into Block/Dodge, but Menelker wasn’t able to get the right cards to be too threatening and I A spammed into victory.

GGs. A pleasure to play with you.

I did the math and in the last three games I won 8 combats to your 26, and half of those I won were blocks. No counterpick in the world is going to matter with those numbers. Even in the first game we went even 8-8.

As variable and I discussed after the match, I feel perfectly fine against Grave. He can definitely be a pain in the ass with True Spark Arc and Dragonheart, not to mention crossup into TPoS though. Overall, I was able to navigate pretty comfortably through each of the matches, but there were definite streaks of pressure that I had to adjust to.

I really want to call out the extreme range shift in game 2. It really caught me off guard and turned the game into a real grind but I was able to maintain my concentration and pull through.

GGs, variable! I wish you luck through the rest of IYL.

perse > rook x3

each match was a textbook vortex into biased blocks, although i did have to dance around thunderclap a few times. landed raw command in each game, and pulled AA every time. and poor rinzler couldn’t get within a hundred feet of a joker. apparently perse was an unfamiliar matchup. hopefully this was helpful in getting a feel for her range.

good luck in the tail of the bracket, rinz!

Ginorm wins 3-1

Game 1 went fairly quick. I know Oni pretty well having mained him way back in the day, but it wasn’t what I was expecting but still a fairly even matchup. I was able to make some plays to either win combat or avoid damage for the most part, and I was able to land a 3 Ace FDB for lethal out of a dodge, no Joker.

Game 2 was the rematch and this time it went blow for blow. I was able to load up for a full FDB to try to squeeze out of the game while behind. But decided this time to not Dodge into it which she punished me for. At that point I was pretty well checkmated with very few options to get around FA.

Game 3 as I’ve lost complete faith with my Arg I went into the dark side to pull out DeGrey with not a lot of work put in on him, just Damage and a strong MU against Oni. And I played it pretty horribly for much of the early to mid game. Once I was a couple combats away from death and she was still a above 50% I was able to sneak in 2 Ks for 16 damage a piece under some normals. I found a Dodge into Q to put her a 1 life and knocked down. I hedged my bets on chip out or catching a Throw looking for another Dodge by going raw Q and was shown the later to go to Game 4.

Game 4 was the character I was waiting for, but not with the character I wanted. And sure enough even though I showed the Ace on Turn 1, on Turn 3 I ran a cheeky 9 Throw into a MC. This was what I was worried about. However after losing my Joker on that turn and getting around the following wake up unharmed, Perse ended up on a low hand. In post game banter turned out she had no blocks and basically had no choice but to run a Q to a Reposte. The resulting combo was a bit janky, but it lead to a very large life lead and with no cards it was going to be a tough road for the comeback.

Thanks @GutterOwl for the games. And good luck the rest of the way. We’ll need to get some casual in with your Perse. I was looking forward and not looking forward to playing against it and was a little bummed the one game we got was tainted by both a rough hand and DG.

Very fun back and forth matches, but here’s the summary of each one. I would typically start out with a nice life lead, then I’d get sucked into the vortex and Flagrantangles would make a very convincing comeback but I’d squeak out a win. Game 2 saw such a comeback that Quince won as I was too scared to play AA earlier.
Game 4 was an unfortunate circumstance. It was the most back and forth, and here we are, both mid life, both high hand. Anything could happen. Flagrantangles loses internet. We wait 15 minutes or so and he is able to join in but it threw off his game some and I pull out a win. Heart goes out to you. Very fun set. Thanks for the GGs!

Ginorm wins 3-1!

After watching a hell of a match between @Gingivitusks and @flagrantangles had to take a few, catch my breath, and go to work, cause I needed to win to keep pace. Also seemed like I stumbled upon sparring partners in the audience which include my opponent and my nemesis so it was time to be the Bad Guy.

But Game 1 was a disaster. Basically towards the end of the match I wanted to show I was willing to raw MA but it got blocked, than managed to miss on a Dodge and never drew another one again. Got TD and Checkmated (no dodge, K, or Joker for burst). Time Spiral AA is real good.

Game 2 was also not great, it’s hard to do damage when you don’t win combats and when you do Nans isn’t helping out much. However I think I may have got value from Game 1’s raw MA and I did it again and it connected to win at low life. I assure you it’s a very fair card.

Game 3 despite an on paper bad MU for Geiger I wasn’t surprised to see him again. A loss and a bail out didn’t show my ability to play the MU. But this time Zane did Zane things and I was pretty healthy at the end.

Game 4 out came the Quince. I was pretty happy to see it. First, I feel comfortable in the MU in general, and if I lost I get to bring in Midori. Win, win. I also changed up my playstyle pretty drastically in the beginning. A lot of blocks, and not a lot of Throws (I’ve been pretty Throw happy up to this point). However Quince had Block reads for days and I was finding it difficult to get any meaningful damage. Eventually we whittled each other down, and the game went pretty long with Quince getting 2 successful Blue Bursts and decent damage turns. Probably had like 130 HP at the end in total. Finally one of the knockdowns put Quince in a rough spot with no Odd Blocks and no Jokers and getting hit by meaty 9QAA.

Great games to Variable. I was really close to dipping on Zane after the first game, though to be honest I had no one else to go to in that MU. So I had to stick it out and I got lucky I hit a fair card to steal Game 2. The Quince game too had a lot of drama as well, Jokers, stacked hands getting tossed to Creator Destroyer, insane Block and Throw timings, nicely mixed Positive Spins, the list goes on. It was a fun series.

Good luck and I hope the rest of the season goes well!

I got my buns baked and handed to me in the first two games but then I made adjustments and started getting into a groove in the last three games. In each one I was building confidence and momentum. Though there was a harrowing point in the last game where I was KD with no blocks in hand and I thought was going to be struck surgically but it would seem that Knifight didn’t have all of the required aces so that worked out very well for me.

Update on this set, after some discussion we ended up playing the 5th game.

New results:

Rinzler 3-2 Variable
Game 5:
:rook: :psfist: :pschip: :quince:

Went down to the WIRE
Variable didn’t quite have the damage to finish me off after I misread.
He left me with 2hp and a few special blocks and the threat of AA let me live long enough that I could take it with Stone Wall.

Thank you again, Variable, for the followup to our original match.

I’ve come to the sad realization that I may have been playing this game for so many years merely trying to chase the feeling of winning because I win a good amount. In the harsh light of winning an average amount I really think it might not be that great of a game. This is 100% my last tournament and I will be deleting my account to commemorate my permanent retirement. I’ll still finish this one though, as I’ve committed myself.
