[Tournament] eXperimental Codex Asynchronous Fall 2023 (XCAFS23)

I’d say to use your discretion over an algorithm if they strongly disagree, the latter is just a tool. You know what you’re doing. If a pairing looks better then use it, parameters be damned. I don’t think they account for future rounds either anyway.

Yeah I would pair exactly as you described, rathy on bye, rng me vs dwarddd or zango then the last two

finally round 4 has been completed (unfortunately it is too late to edit the post above and include the results into the post) and we have to say goodbye to @Dreamfire & @charnel_mouse

for my question above: I didn’t do the pairing selection properly last round and therewith the bye for @rathyAro was not included. After correcting this, the algorithm didn’t need any fiddling with the parameters. The only randomness needed in this round was about who starts as P1 and who starts as P2.

Here comes round 5 part 1:

  1. [XCAFS23] Round5 part1: P1 dwarddd monopurple vs P2 FrozenStorm [Anarchy]/Growth/Strength
  2. [XCAFS23] Round5 part1: P1 zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present vs P2 rathyAro [Finesse]/Peace/Truth
  3. bye: @thehug0naut

Round 5 part 2 then reads:

  1. [XCAFS23] Round5 part2: P1 FrozenStorm [Anarchy]/Growth/Strength vs P2 dwarddd monopurple
  2. [XCAFS23] Round5 part2: P1 rathyAro [Finesse]/Peace/Truth vs P2 zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present
  3. bye: @thehug0naut

the current standings are:

Players Deck Wins Losses Byes
dwarddd monopurple 5 1 2
zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present 6 2 0
FrozenStorm [Anarchy]/Growth/Strength 5 3 0
thehug0naut [Feral]/Present/Discipline 5 3 2
rathyAro [Finesse]/Peace/Truth 2 4 2
charnel_mouse [Balance]/Blood/Strength 3 5 0
Dreamfire [Anarchy/Fire]/Demon 3 5 0
Bryce_The_Rice [Demonology]/Necromancy/Finesse 1 5 0

so @rathyAro is still on elimination (if you do lose your first match, you are entitled for a rematch even though you formally are eliminated) and @FrozenStorm might get there in case he loses both matches.

Good luck everyone, I hope you enjoy your games!

We have to say goodbye to @FrozenStorm & @rathyAro
The next round reads:

Round 6 part 1:

  1. [XCAFS23] Round6 part1: P1 dwarddd monopurple  vs :medal_sports: P2 thehug0naut [Feral]/Present/Discipline
    Bye: @zango

Part 2:

  1. [XCAFS23] Round6 part2: P1 thehug0naut [Feral]/Present/Discipline  vs :medal_sports: P2 dwarddd monopurple
    Bye: @zango

The current standings (already including my bye but obviously no results from round 6) are

Players Deck Wins Losses Byes
dwarddd monopurple 7 1 2
zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present 7 2 3
thehug0naut [Feral]/Present/Discipline 5 3 2
FrozenStorm [Anarchy]/Growth/Strength 5 5 0
charnel_mouse [Balance]/Blood/Strength 3 5 0
Dreamfire [Anarchy/Fire]/Demon 3 5 0
rathyAro [Finesse]/Peace/Truth 2 5 2
Bryce_The_Rice [Demonology]/Necromancy/Finesse 1 5 0

So @thehug0naut is on elimination if he loses both matches.

Good luck and have fun @dwarddd & @thehug0naut

PS: unfortunately it’s again too late to edit the results into the round 5 post…

So @thehug0naut managed to stay in the tournament and is rightfully rewarded with a bye. The next round then reads

  1. [XCAFS23] Round7 part1: P1 dwarddd monopurple  vs :medal_sports: P2 zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present
  2. [XCAFS23] Round7 part2: P1 zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present :medal_sports: vs  P2 dwarddd monopurple

And here comes round 8 after some intense games. @dwarddd gets the deserved bye and @thehug0naut is on elimination (and in case I win part 1 you are entitled for a rematch)

Part 1:

  1. [XCAFS23] Round8 part1: P1 thehug0naut [Feral]/Present/Discipline  :skull_and_crossbones: vs :medal_sports: P2 zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present

Part 2:

  1. [XCAFS23] Round8 part2: P1 zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present :medal_sports: vs  P2 thehug0naut [Feral]/Present/Discipline

We have to say goodbye to @thehug0naut and we are within the finals. @dwarddd is facing an uphill battle as he already is on elimination while so far I “only” have two losses, both suffered from @dwarddd so he knows how to tackle me properly

  1. [XCAFS23] FINALS Round9 part1: P1 dwarddd monopurple  :skull_and_crossbones: :2nd_place_medal: vs :medal_sports: :1st_place_medal: P2 zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present
  2. [XCAFS23] FINALS Round9 part2: P1 zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present  vs :medal_sports: P2 dwarddd monopurple
  3. [XCAFS23] FINALS Round9 part3: P1 dwarddd monopurple vs P2 zango [Finesse]/Feral/Present

All the best in terms of luck and fun for you!

And here we are, the probably longest PBF tournament in the history of Codex is completed with the lucky ending on my side. A big thank you goes out to all involved, including spectators!

The final standings read

If no one else volunteers, I’m going to open up a new thread for our upcoming summer tournament in the next two weeks or so, even though I myself will not be able to participate.

Ok I promised I was going to write some thoughts about this, since it was my idea in the first place.

My conclusion: meh.

Having (almost) completely deterministic hands for the first two turns made the game less interesting. It technically increased the amount of reading your opponent that was possible, but for most decks there’s simply a correct order you should put your cards in. This reduced the amount of decision making, because the first two turns had to be played basically near perfectly to avoid getting steam rolled by perfect draws, kind of like chess openings but with way less options.
Ultimately it ended up favouring decks that thrive on consistency (purple & neutral starter), and kind of lead to boring games to spectate for the first few turns.

So yeah, it was a cool experiment but I don’t think it’s a way forward. Leave this one where it lies.
