No Battlesuits yet, so blocking $2 is worth it. Newsman goes in the backline to keep him from being FFed.

The loss of tempo from Plasmo invites a Jail. However, Plasmo also indicates Seers, especially considering our discussion after the last game.
So I’ll have a look at his hand. If he has a Stewardess to bounce my Newsman, I’ll build Jail. And if not, maybe I’ll draw a better unit to play?
Teching Hounds to try and keep pace with the value of Plasmo and seers.

A Seer, as expected, but also Now!, which is bad news for my Hounds. I’ll probably need to tech Free Speech next. For now, I’ll play Jail after all, to encourge HolyTispon to go down on cards and have less consistent access to targeting spells.

HolyTispon has the board, but he’s way down on cards. But I’ll admit I didn’t fully take into account Seer hasting in Plasmo next turn, and also Geiger’s cycling.
I’ll push Free Speech back a turn, since I want more cheap units to play. Even if they die the turn after arrival, they get me patrol goodies and hopefully force HolyTispon to stay low on cards.
I would’ve really liked to get a tower this turn, but tech 2 is more important. I’ll try to make do, patrol-wise, but it means taking some risks. Specifically, if he can dig for Now!, I’m screwed.

Quince and Macciatus give me a way to generate reasonable board presence without emptying my hand. If Quince survives, I can get a Mirror copy of Reteller next turn and maybe sneak in a hero/building kill. But more likely I’ll just replenish my patrol zone and tech up.
If I happen to draw Gryphon early off technician, I can play Bigby over Reteller and Stash it. I’m keeping Lawful Search in the deck over Aven to facilitate cycling for a Gryphon, and because I feel like I have a respectable number of illusions as it is.

I have to kill Quince because I can’t allow for a Free Speech.
And without Quince, these mirrors are not very scary. I would really love to have a Xenostalker with Now! next turn which would allow me to walk all over the patrol zone and pop some mirrors
(this would require playing something to jail to get the seer and use it to pump Prynn so that she can kidnap the whisperer). But Prynn has to survive. In principle, Prynn might die if he decides to arrest to Mox and throw everyone at her - but if the whisperer attacks Prynn, it dies, so I would still able to use the Xenostalker to pop a bunch of illusions in the patrol zone (hounds?).

By attacking once and Jailbreaking Seer, HolyTispon can get another trashing for Prynn. But even so, I don’t think he can both clear my patrol and break tech 3. And with Quince now waiting on the bench, I have 80% odds (before the tech draw) to deal 10 unstoppable hasted damage next turn, which is enough to turn any board state around… or so I hope.

I’m sure there’s a better turn for me out there. That’s what I came up with. And now you kill with me with Gryphons. Again.

I’m a gold short of copying my Gryphon twice, so I’ll have to make do with 10 base damage. However, I can get one cheap hero kill with MTruth, and one expensive hero kill with Quince’s midband. Not sure the 2nd one is worth it.
I’d like to keep my Mirror Gryphon, which requires keeping Quince alive, which could only work if I patrol something that wouldn’t pop/bounce in front of him, i.e. another hero. That also means I can’t afford Free Speech, but hopefully Newsman takes care of the biggest threat, which is Now! I guess? But not if the Newsman gets bounced…
In any case, I don’t expect to lost both Quince and tech 3, and I only need one (plus a decent draw) to finish. Hmm, maybe I can increase my odds with two more Gryphons and a tech lab? Sure, why not.

I stacked my deck to have a chance, because I was dead. I’m still dead, as my draw wasn’t even good. But anyway, let’s do another round or two before we finish this.

Good game, sir, and congratulations to us both for finishing the series!

This was a real learning experience for me, not only about the matchup and the two codices but also about how a meta evolves, even between two players from one match to the next.

I’m not sure how well our series reflects on Purple vs. Blue rather than just HolyTispon as Purple vs. Dreamfire as Blue, but I do think we can try to draw some general conclusions.

On my end, I felt like the lack of early pressure (especially relative to Blue vs. Black/Red) let me develop my tech 2 plans rather than just react, while also preparing answers (informed by Lawful Search) to your strategy. Even when you were able to wrest control of the board in the midgame, I could fall back on card- and gold-efficient units to stall for explosive Gryphon+Mirror plays.

Yeah, I think it’s definitely more our match-up than the color matchup. Still, it was fun. Perhaps in a few months we’ll pick it up and try again - in a different time in my life, I may be able to do better while playing on the forums. For now it’s more a pressure valve than it is anything else. I enjoyed the games, and the challenge, mostly because it was nice not to have to know any other card than the limited set of blue v purple.

My thoughts on the match up in general are that Purple is somewhat disadvantaged, though not to the extent reflected by my results against you. I think it was worse as P1 than as P2, so perhaps there’s a bit of a P1 advantage here. In general, purple struggles to put a lot of pressure before tech 2 and I almost always got to tech 2 at a huge disadvantage. Blue has a starter card that blocks three Purple starting cards, including the only one that allows to put on any pressure and it’s quite hard to get rid of the newsman without Battle Suits or stewardess, who comes later. Even later the options are relatively limited because the copying ability makes lots of typically useful purple units less appealing (including KoTC, Palsmodium, Argonaut, Glaxx, Vir’s Mech and even Nullcraft) and Purple’s heroes struggle to bring a lot of board presence to the table.

I think a better player than me would rush to Archons more often - I have a terrible time get to tech 3 in general, in this game, so I guess I’m just not very good at planning ahead in the right way. There were several time when better teching on my part, and sometimes better draws, would have allowed me to assimilate your jail or use Vortoss Emblem on some illusions. I often didn’t get good draws because I went down on cards - which is another issue I had. Purple often goes down on cards to play Battle Suits when it can, but Blue has such an easy time getting card advantage with Brave Knight, Lawful Search, Scribe, Reteller of Truth, and Bigby. I often fell way behind. And I think the lack of options really is coupled badly with the fact you can use lawful search, a starter deck card, to see what I have and plan accordingly.

So someone who would do better on the mind games would have done much better in our games. In general, I’d love to see a better player pick up purple - @Shadow_Night_Black or @FrozenStorm or @zhavier or basically anyone else on the forums - and maybe we’ll get a better sense of the balance between Purple and Blue. Personally, I enjoy playing on the forums but at the same time, I can’t really love it. I do it because it’s helpful for me to able to take a little gaming break here and there, but it’s hard for me to be invested in the game in this way and have a proper plan.

In any case, here we are. Good games, friend - and maybe one day we’ll pick it up again.

Some other cards I struggled to put to good use, but would probably be very useful in this match up are Rewind, Origin Story and Undo. Origin Story can be great to get rid of Quince when there’s also a mirror in play and Quince is protected in the back row. Rewind is just a great answer to times when you have a bunch of tokens out or I’m behind on board position, but I was usually without enough money to do it.

Also, I failed to see how useful Xenostalker is for much of the time. I have an inexplicable infatuation with Hive which makes me want to use this card every game. It’s not healthy, and I don’t think it’s a great card, but I do love it. I think it’s biased me. Also, I was just really worried about facing a copied Void Star.
