Blue (thehug0naut) vs Black (Frozenstorm) balance testing

I have Death and Decay so I will break all the buildings and I suspect that’ll about do it yeah?

Yeah let’s call that one done. Be interested to hear your take on it.

From my side I went a touch ham (pun intended) with Porky but I thought it was a fun line that stopped Vandy attack or exhaust. It was a touch too expensive though, especially in cards, and the low hand situation that followed wasn’t great. I felt forced into trading Oni and then never really got my Garrison’s going, mostly I think due to poor teching.

Definitely down for more punishment playing as P2

It still feels like it boils down to your control is really expensive, and I have a lot of cheap pressure I can generate. Even missing the Crypt Crawler draw on turn 3 that would have dealt with the Aven much cheaper, I was still able to get rid of it (and skeletal archery isn’t even needed).

Newsman on 2 is definitely doing hard work here, though.

Blue lacking really strong, reliable Tech 2 feels like the killer here. All my T2 options are pretty solid and don’t need a lot of engine setup to provide value, whereas Truth really needs the Macciatus / Reteller / X setup strong to lock me down (Orpal can snipe the pieces easily), and Peace needs space on the board that your Tech1 isn’t buying you.

Perhaps Vandy’s maxband should be nerfed to not target and apply to “lowest attack tech 0 or 1”? She’s already still a strong presence w/o the Resist, Ulti Fetch and DP cost increase. That or maybe making Orpal max at 7 instead of 6? Not sure what’d be best to try next, but overall I still think I’m not nerfed enough (or Blue needs a little love? but where?)

Yes I’d agree with that assessment. Newsman was extremely key in both games and by the time I got to Tech II you could quickly overwhelm me before anything could get established. The good news is I’m not instantly pancaked so the Deteriorate changes have really helped and we should take that as a win.

I’m sure part of my issues were caused by suboptimal piloting but I had the strong sense that my Tech I and heroes really compound the imbalance of power. Yours are great value and/or high threat whereas in this matchup mine are generally fragile, expensive and/or weak:

Heroes (not considering spells)

  • Bigby - Cheap but weak profile and non-threatening abilities
  • Oni - High threat but very expensive
  • Quince - Potentially high threat abilities but expensive and needs existing board

Tech 0

  • Director - Good but only a 1/1
  • Inspector - Unplayable vs Deteriorate
  • Aven - Good but fragile
  • Newsman - Excellent ability but weak stats
  • Musketeer - Very weak for cost
  • Porky - Too expensive vs StW, expensive and slow ability

Tech I

  • Cadet - Excellent
  • Knight - Too expensive vs StW, ability unreliable vs Black
  • Tax Collector - Weak for cost and very situational
  • Scribe - Weak for cost but reliable card draw
  • Hound - Good profile but fragile
  • Flagbearer - Fragile and ability is situational

From a buffing Blue perspective I think one simple option would be Tax Collector to cost 1g or become a 3/3. The 1g version is probably my preference as it maintains the uniqueness/design flavour of being an administrator but makes him a lot less situational.

Currently he just feels bad to tech and play if you don’t steal gold and Blue really needs playable non-illusion units with more than 1HP in this matchup. As an upside, it would make the threat of Blue gold theft much more real across its matchups. I doubt anyone plays around Tax Collector in vanilla! Main downside would be the potential effect on matchups with Purple and Green but my intuition is it wouldn’t be a huge shift for either.

Your suggestion of nerfing Vandy Maxband I also think is good. We’ve already changed her so it’s preferable to change her again and even with the nerfs she remains a one hero answer to everything Blue wants to do! Losing targeting would mean you have to actually Tech in some answers to early illusions, though Orpal will still wreck them so I don’t think they’re a good build for this matchup.

The forced weakest unit change is really interesting, would that mean it could be triggered on an opponents turn with active player choosing?! If so that might really bring much needed risk to using Vandy and possibly even enhances the “great power with drawbacks” flavour! I also like that it means Black has to play around it to achieve the most optimal target (e.g. to avoid Haunt) and it doesn’t disrupt the designed synergy with Gargoyle if timed right (a minor consideration but nice).

Should we try both a Vandy nerf and a Blue buff or just one of them for now?

I do think Illusions are the play here, Orpal is still good but combined w/ Newsman on 2, Illusions are pretty great early pressure. I think that’s your in, and w/ Vandy not targeting I think I have a pretty even match early. If I can’t Deteriorate, Sickness or Vandy ult them away

I think we try Vandy on no targeting on its own. I’m keenly aware that Blue was the OP thing w/o nerfs before release; the control is deceptively strong. Newsman on 2 is tough for me to get rid of.

Felt like I might need a change - thought I’d have a go of P1 this time!

Also, apologies for my wall of text above, sometimes I get a touch too intense about my ideas

Test 3 Nerfs
Deteriorate Cost → 1g, Cannot target illusions
Dark Pact Cost → 1g
Vandy Midband Remove Resist 1, Cannot fetch Metamorphosis

Oni + Director is the most aggressive opener so let’s play that. Nice to get rid of Building Inspector turn 1 too, I think it’s one of the worst Blue cards vs Black

I would have used MT to save Oni some HP but the hand size damage would probably be a major issue. I decided if it were me I would want to reduce the Blue board as much as possible so I patrolled TD instead of hitting his base to discourage StW. It’s poor value anyway on a 1g unit but even worse now.

I’m going for very cheap Illusion units to complement Oni. I considered Elite Training but it targets so it can’t help out TD or Illusions.

Note to self: Elite training not targeting might be a candidate buff along with cheaper Tax Collector.

isn’t imp in elite?

When the heart of the cards gives you an easy Vandy kill as Blue you absolutely take it. Worker skip only to avoid totally tanking my hand right now. HH to let me reduce card spend. The loss of Lawful Search was quite painful here, being able to look at his hand would have really helped direct my play at what I feel is a critical juncture. Now I have to navigate some treacherous terrain with guesswork.

Tactically, I should continue leaning on Oni with the aim of hitting AoW asap. Black is actually not so great vs heroes so doubly makes sense to do this. Bigby is cheap and offers sidelining, card draw and combo management so is an excellent partner. Quince gives me some pseudo haste with the Hound guaranteed next turn so that’s good if I whiff AoW but it puts me under a lot of gold pressure, and mirrors are horribly weak without a Newsman up, something I want to avoid so my hand starts to recover.

Overall I think I prefer going Bigby and maxing Oni to fish for AoW (which means I need to tech another copy). If I also tech Injunction it gives me 3 spells in my deck that really mess with his board. Just got to hope to draw one of them!

Sall good

Get rid of hoodie, break Tech II and try to give Oni some protection in case of Doom Grasp. Right now he needs to have 11 gold to pay for Garth+Skeleton+Deteriorate+StW+Doom Grasp so I think it’s off the table unless I’ve missed something. I paid for maxband Bigby so he doesn’t immediately die if we have Orpal and Sickness shenanigans incoming.

I think the plan is still to hit Garrisons if we get through this cycle, so lets add both of them and see how things play out.

Edit: added Oni action

Is Oni doing anything? Seems odd he isn’t attacking or patrolling
