Thoughts

I have no idea what my plan is here. FrozenStorm has both Peace and Growth, so he can out-engine me if it comes to that. Most of the plans I can come up with involve two specs: for example, Garrison + Drill Sergeant + Barbarbarian + Morningstar Pass. I definitely want Drill Sergeant, a rune engine is pretty nice with access to hasted units (Messenger).

However, I can’t work out a decent way to deal with mass weenies, which we’ll probably see here if FrozenStorm doesn’t manage to fire off a Metamorphosis. Barbarbarians get overpower, otherwise I’d be looking at Revolver Ocelot or Onimaru stuff for sparkshot. Maybe a Final Smash would actually be useful against a rune engine? DeGrey could also be handy, against Onimaru and Argagarg.

I need to deal with Vandy first, though. Rook is the default option here, and I might need Birds to try and deal with her effectively, anyway. Not much I can do about the Traffic Director, unfortunately, unless I can cheaply Wither it next turn.

Do I put Brick Thief or Rook in front here? Can Rook be killed in Squad Leader? Only by maxbanding Vandy, I think: Aven + Manufactured Truth + midband is too expensive. Rook goes in front, then.

Can I kill Vandy here?

  1. Brick Thief trades with Traffic Director, midband Rook - (2g), Bloom Rook (0g), Rook kills Vandy. Skips a worker, and Rook is on his own at L7 4/3, with Building Inspector on the board. Full hand next turn. Lose 4g+2c to gain 5g+1c, so 1g-1c. Probably not worth skipping a worker.
  2. Brick Thief trades with Traffic Director, Timely Messenger trades with Building Inspector (5g), Bloom Rook (3g), Wither Vandy (0g), Rook kills Vandy. Skips a worker, Rook is at L3 3/3. Hand on 4 next turn. Lose 8g+4c to gain 5g+2c, so -3c. Definitely not worth skipping a worker.
  3. Wither Traffic Director (4g), Timely Messenger trades with Building Inspector (3g), Rook and Brick Thief kill Vandy, worker, Tech I. Rook on L3 2/1. Hand on 4 next turn. Lose 5g+3c to gain 5g+2c. Oh, but I can’t target Traffic Director, never mind.

Not in a way that’s particularly economical. Option 1 is close to being OK, leaving Rook at L7, but I don’t think it’s worth skipping a worker so early. I’ll just clear what I can, leave two units with resist in patrol so Vandy can’t just blast through with Shadow Blade and kill Rook. It does mean FrozenStorm can manipulate his gold so that her doom doesn’t target anything on my side, but I’ll take the risk.

Holding on to Granfalloon Flagbearer instead of Wither, for Onimaru / Argagarg spells.

A little annoyed I forgot about Newsman, but Brick Thief lets me go straight for Earthquake instead. I’ll start off with teching Garrison + Sergeant first, though, see what I want as my fourth card this cycle. Hoping Rook doesn’t get killed by a copied Aven.

Thoughts

I was going to get another round of teching in, but I think I’m better off getting my hand size back up, and trying to draw into Garrison / Earthquake before I fall behind. With that in mind, I’m taking the second Cadet before the second Sergeant.

Do I want to float 2 gold, or build an add-on? I think the add-on can wait, until I see whether I need another blocking hero. If not, I might want to go for DeGrey, or a Colossus to close out the game, if I don’t just take an Air Hammer to exploit FrozenStorm’s weak anti-air.

Bloom becomes a worker, since Sergeant will mostly replace it.

Whiffing my T3 draw and then losing vandy on a lineup with both my vandy spells felt pretty doom and gloomy, and I think you’d have been better off laying Birds + OC and not going so hard at her. The card cost there was just not worth killing her. I think you win if you let Vandy max but work your way to the earlier Garrison , but tough that neither of our decks had great hero-hate for max Vandy or Rook. I had the odds in my favor for turning things around on the reshuffle better!

If the Newsman hadn’t shown up at just the wrong time, that’s what I’d have done, yes. I think I let myself get a bit too paranoid about the threat of Shadow Blade. I went in knowing there was going to be an engine race, so I should have just held my nerve and rushed to Garrisons. Even with the Birds blocked, with Garrisons up, I could have more easily gotten help from Brick Thief to get a good Earthquake off, which is what I vaguely tried to pivot to.
