RACE #3: zhavier (Mono Black) vs. FrozenStorm (Mono White)

@zhavier will be going first against @FrozenStorm. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks @EricF but this will be a third game for me again  @zhavier I will probably not play a turn for a couple days, just as a heads up

I have you vs Mooseknuckles, what’s your other active game?

Just started the game you pegged for me a couple days ago with Castanietzsche @EricF

Ok, I see what happened - I ended up on your CASS game, and thought you had finished your RACE game, since the timing was very close. Carry on, this will be your next game (and zhavier is a Hare, so he can just take a little nap).

There are no good trades here lol… Savior Monk is about the only card in my deck that can trade even with that opening. I can afford a tower but it’s too easy for him to kill, so I’m going to save it and hope to drop Tower + some chunky stuff in front of it next turn… I hate black lol

Of course Vandy can just kill stuff for free… this tower isn’t looking to prove all that helpful… I feel a big blowout coming but already I’m kind of backed up against it? In lieu of committing hard to a tech 2 plan right now, I’m going to bring one YLD in and a Reversal, and float the gold to make him wonder what I’m up to. I’m a little vulnerable if he’s holding Shadow Blade, but if he digs one up with Vandy mid that’s okay. Next turn then I can decide for sure whether I go hard at a tech 2 plan, or try and do some shenanigans like Rook max + double earthquake.

That’s a lot of gold there.

Lol I’ll concede, this game was a disaster… GG WP @zhavier

@EricF this one’s done, I’m cool not getting another match but it’s fine assigning me one too if it makes others schedules convenient or if someone needs another game to be eligible for winning something.

I’m really not sure where I had a better move, feel free to give me tips but I felt like I weighed my options pretty well  I suppose Grave + Midband in Elite turn 1 would have at least given me a way to slow you down a bit. Still, White as P2 really feels hard, especially against Black. Sacrifice the Weak really should have either required you to sacrifice something, or cost 3g IMO

Ok, I won’t worry about filling you up, but Bomber requested bonus Thanksgiving matches, and you haven’t played him yet, so that one pairing can still happen.

It did, i sacrificed the skeleton… But I am guessing you meant that it requires something be in play to be sacrificed, like Doom Grasp wording. It didn’t matter for this game, though.

If you had not floated 5g, you might have been able to put out a little more protection for sacrifice the weak to keep the ninja up, which admittedly weakens the ninja. Alternately, Twins and a spell instead of IPN. Speed of the Fox could have been a good choice, especially with all the gold you were floating. I think IPN is particularly susceptible to sac the weak. Flagbearer is also decently good at neutralizing Deteriorate, less so against shadow blade. Poisonblade was largely an answer for Rook, in case you had been planning to get him out to slow me down

I definitely was trying to get Rook out, so Poisonblade Rogue was an excellent (and very annoying for me) choice.

Speed of the Fox would have just got Sets killed so that was not a great option, getting another thing out behind IPN would have just meant weakening it (and going further behind on cards, which gets me in HUGE trouble if you Shadow Blade or Imp), Rambasas aren’t terribly good on defense… there really aren’t “good” options to how you opened, just potentially better ones if I guess what’s in your hand each turn. I bet on you not having StW + Deteriorate lined up, obviously bet wrong. Of course IPN is weak to StW but there isn’t much getting around that, nor is there much way of getting around it if you have Shadow Blade… IPN + Savior Monk behind it is about as good a defense as I can mount, and you had everything lined up to stop that. I can’t remove Haunt, and you could have just tapped Vandy for Shadow Blade to remove another blocker if I had one. You don’t get tech 2 then, but I’m still totally done even if you don’t.

I think opening Grave + Midband was really my only chance here, I guess I’ll try that next time. Being honest though, I’m beginning to lose faith in the “you haven’t lost when you sit at the table” promise of the game though: it definitely feels like a capable player on Black or the “obvious” multicolors is a pretty sure bet to beat another capable player on something that isn’t those things… There were certainly ways in which you would have heavily punished a Grave + Midband opening…

Grave+ Midband means that I either spend all my gold killing him on T2 left with a vandy at 4/2 and a doomed skeleton, or let him stick around kill something for free and then heal and sword something or just plain snapback. I don’t think you give Rambasa enough credit on defense, more bodies is still good. But the obvious true defensive play is Boulder+Mythmaking.

Yea Boulder loses way too hard to StW though

As for the Grave play, say you summon Skeletons + Haunt t2 though, or only patrol Jav in Techn and do Rogue + Haunt like you did: you’re going to neuter Grave and I have no other board if I’m getting a sword on Grave, that’s not exactly great… I agree it’s better than what I did, but not great  I guess I’ll have to try it next time and see how I do!

I was pretty sure you would snapback on T2, you did have the gold for it and it was even in your hand, because I didn’t midband Vandy and thought oh well, at least i’ve got these other good units out. It might have been at least a little disruptive to my plans.
