Thoughts : I think he teched a Bird Nest, let’s kill his Rook then. My gameplan idea is to go for extra-fast Liberty Gryphons (so I chose the Flagbearer). I don’t to try a surprise Dreamscape/Boot Camp combo because I’m fearing Mind Parry monk and invisible ninjas and a Censorship strategy would expose me to a hero-oriented strategy what White is especially good on. Overeager/Garrison would be a bit risky too because of Glourious Ninjas but may worth the try if he techs a lot of targetting things. As Tech II Peace I’d certainly rather rely on Air Hammers and Patriot Gryphon to rush him. I’ll be low on card next turn so let’s try to build a Surplus and not a Tower this game.[/details]

GG WP! I’ve played this match up a few times with @FrozenStorm, and we always had a hell of a time getting a P2 win from Blue side. I feel like to have to hit good draws and play perfectly to make it work, but then again I am a terrible blue player. Any tips playing your side?

It’s my first time facing a Fox Den’s Students strategy, and I’ve yet to think about it !
I think that my first turns were ok (Bird Nest hits hard as Blue, Elite Training costs a card and Onimaru is especially bad against Snapback ! I was happy to deal with Rook !).
About the third turn, I think I did right about patrolling both mirrored Newsmen. If I patrolled only the mirrored one, a single snapback would have made me instant-loose the game.
But my turn 3 tech choice was terrible, I should have teched 2*Judgment Day at turn 3, but it wouldn’t have been enough because Setsuki would have been intact.

I’d love some advice from experienced players to understand my errors in this game !

As Mono-Blue I feel so weak against hero-based strategies, but there must be some tricks there.
Free Speech costs a card and its effect lasts only one turn… But maybe should I tech it more often thought. Or Jurisdiction at least ?

You bring up a great point about your Newsman Patrol. Initially, I thought it was a huge mistake, but I didnt even think about Snapback! You might have been better off NOT copying the Newsman, patrolling the Mirror, and BF the Newsman. Sure it leaves Quince Vulnerable, but I still wouldnt be able to hook the mirror, so I’d lose an attacker to him. Really tough patroller choices overall though!

Only thing I can say about this match up is that the very few times @FrozenStorm or myself have won in the P2 position with Blue was when we drew perfect combos of Free Speech/Injunction/Juristiction. I think especially against Hero strategies, Free Speech has always been a huge crutch of mine. Frozen has used Injuction quite effectively as well. Sure, they cost a card, but relatively cheap and give you the breathing room Blue needs to get to their tasty Tech 2 and Hero Spells

Blue is very hard to play as going second, in my experience, ESPECIALLY against effective aggro heroes.

Free Speech is always a good tech against Black and White; despite it only lasting one turn, it can give you just enough space to get a tech 2 plan online (which is where Blue really shines).

Also an earlier tower is almost essential for Blue P2 in my experience: I routinely get it down turn 2 unless my hand is very awkward to make it work.

Overall I think you did reasonably well, just needed Free Speech and Judgement Day as you identified :slight_smile:

I disagree on the patrol move turn 3 as well: I think if you had not attacked w/ the mirror hound and SQL it, NOT copied the newsman and just patrolled a 0/1 mirror next to the real hound, you’d have forced him into bad trades no matter what.

Also I don’t think planning your patrol around the potential your opponent has drawn a certain card overwrites patrolling where your opponent can beat you badly just with what’s on the board. Youngbuck had a great play to make with nothing additional from his hand the way you patrolled: you might as well roll the dice he doesn’t have Snapback in hand and let him take a better trade if he does. You at least have upside that you come out ahead if he doesn’t have it :wink:

The more I think about it, the more I agree with you about spells especially Free Speech.
And +1 for the vanilla patrolling mirror too !

As P2 Blue what were your turn2 and 3 tech choices ?
I never know what to tech as Mono-Blue :scream_cat:

@FrozenStorm about your last post, I didn’t patrol the mirrored Spectral hound because I was afraid of Snapback. But you may be right here too, as Snapback would cost him a card + 3 gold and give me a new fresh hero. What is more I didn’t have any Truth spell so I could have adapted my strategy very easily.

As P2, I’ve been teching Scribe / Hound + Free Speech / Injunction turn 2, and Overeager Cadet x 2 / A Garrison Turn 3 to go for Peace, or one Overeager Cadet + Scribe/Hound/Free Speech if I’m going for Law / Truth

Scribe is really great as it doesn’t cost a card, and it buys time on defense (or makes for good MTruth fodder to steal an opponent’s T1 hero positives). It also helps you cycle to answers you may have to tech, as Blue has much more specific counters to things and less general “good spells”

@Castanietzsche I’ve found Scribe to be a reliable tech choice early on in addition to Hound. Helps you swing a bigger patrol or get a spell like Free Speech if you dont draw well.

I think Injunction and Free speech are must techs against white though. White’s big stick to swing with at Tech 1 is Rambasas, especially since IPN and Boulder become less attractive with Arrest and MTruth around
