aye, Zane is very important to mono red, as burst damage, patrol zone disrtuption, as well as card draw/gold generation. I think if you have just built tech 2 or played tax men rather then Mines you would have won that game. As you need to hold purple back, giving them space to build does not seem like a good strat.
Personally I dislike mines, given that they have a 50% chance to turn 1 card into 1 gold, over a turn (even when you protect them), given Red can struggle on cards rather then gold. It seems like a bad trade to me.
