Casual game ARMed_Pirate ([Bashing]/Blood/Fire) vs ascendingPrime (mono-blue)

Ya, you have me. With Bigby and quince gone you have a gurenteed 7 to base that completely ignores my patrol zone. In retrospect, I think I was way too fragile in the early game. When you took out my T1 on turn 3 it really through off my draw-cycle and I wasn’t able to recover until about last turn (which clearly was too late). Good game. I concede, but if you want to take a crack at tabling me I posted a turn trying to make it as hard as possible.

…So, you up for another game? Normally I do them in pairs where we keep codexs, but now I would take P1.

You actually had me really worried with the Free Speech and Injunction. And continuous Free Speech really would have kept me in bad shape, as I was super-heavy on spells and abilities…

Now that I look at your turns, your T4 lists your next hand as:

Did something funky happen with the turn re-do, or did you accidentally hit discard/draw twice? Getting Free Speech any time before T8 would have kept you solidly in it, and I can’t find FS in any of your starting hands until T8, which I think is impossible.

I think you did have the right hand in your sheet, because you played Tax Collector T5, which would be from the correct hand. And your T5 was awesome and killed my heroes, so I could see why playing FS was unnecessary there.

I think it’s really bad luck that it ended up on the bottom of your deck after that. I think teching another FS instead of Art of War probably would have been the way to go.

Good game, sir. That was the first time I’ve been able to make either Jaina or DS Archer work, so it was super-satisfying; thank you for being so gracious in defeat.

I would love to play another one, but my next tournament game has started, so it may have to wait until I finish that up. If I have some free time, I’ll check in, so feel free to take the first turn. (:

Hey Pirate, thanks for the feedback. On the redo turn I had tried to manually set everything in the template back to original state and replay the turn. In principal substituting a 1g worker for a functionally 1g tax collector shouldn’t have been too hard, but it is entirely possible I messed up the spreadsheet (definitely prefer cards).

I only had 1 freespeech and 1 injunction, so it didn’t seem that unusual to me if they weren’t always in-hand.

It is interesting, I used to always play against the same person, and I think that colored my expectations quite a bit

  • you killed Oni faster than I expected, but after you let Quince linger (kept me from cycling heros and resulted in a null-tech of art of war)
  • you killed my T1 unexpectedly (I think you went down a card or two to do it, but it forced me to discard BK & Cadet on turn-3 which is IMO where you won the game)
  • you went for Fire over blood and mostly skipped over T.1 (which made gurdian at the gates a null-tech)

In any event, I think I learned some things (blue is not a super-intuitive codex for me). Good Game.

Also. I just realized I messed up all of last game. I thought tech was accounted for at the end of the turn rather than the beginning. It looks like I had a turn-0 tech before. My bad and you still won.

Thoughts

So the obvious play is hero, building inspector, worker. That said, the scaleing of early units is pretty dramatic and pirate seems to be the type who is very attuned to this scaleing. As such I am really tempted by a turn-1 jail just to be as disruptive as possible. Gameplan, I think I would like to try a T.1 strat this time. This will be a bit risky (T.1 building as a single point of failure), but I will try to offset that w/ a heros-hall + threatening heros.

The best way to do this is to go into File, find the “Version history” option, and “See version history”. Then you can pick the right previous version from the drop-downs on the right side.
It’s easy to make an illegal play, so I spend a fair amount of time in that menu. (;

Whoops! No worries, it’s a learning experience. I’ve done so much online Codex that when I tried to teach physical Codex to someone I once got confused and had us both skip tech on the first turn… at the end of the turn.

It’s especially weird, because you’re supposed to tech at the beginning of the turn, but unless you draw due to something like Lawful Search or Dark Pact, you can effectively take your whole turn, then go back and retroactively add in the techs once you’ve decided how you want to play it. Nothing in the turn is locked in until you hit the Discard/Draw.
The effect is that it feels like you’re teching at the end of every turn except the first, even though technically it’s the beginning of every turn except the first. d:

EDIT - tech was brave knight & cadet

First turn jail was totally a ““lets just see what happens””, but forcing pirate to skip a card (and presumbably go down one next turn) is really solid damage. The natural counter to all this is spells (Jana’s speciality) but traffic-cop being untargetable + Oni in lookout means my T1 is safe and Oni goes down only if pirate spends an entire hand. This means my cadet comes out next turn, and I can either mid-band oni OR try to lawful search into brave knight and fall-back to a heros hall if that doesn’t work… the point is options.

Also: Don’t forget to add 5 HP to your Tech I so it’ll show up. (:

So I have a 33% chance of a killer hand (I’m writing this before I draw, b/c I won’t have the heart to put all this down if it doesn’t work) :: frenzy oni to clear tenderfoot; lawful search into brave knight; play brave knight; manufactured truth traffic cop into brave knight; traffic cop kills jana giving lvls to oni and coming back to my hand !!! comes out to a 5g 2-card play that completely resets pirate’s board and leaves me w/ a strong one …but it is only 1/3. I think I still have to do it. Even at a 2/3 discount the pay-out is just too good considering all the money that has been dumped into Jana and the fact that pirate still doesn’t have a T1 (…hey, wait a sec --why doesn’t pirate have a T1?). Also I really don’t want to worker any of the cards in my hand, so maybe I’ll draw bluecoat and have something to get rid of. K, here it goes… NOOOO!!! Building inspector, literally the worst of all possible outcomes. I guess my consolation prize of seeing 2 burning volleys in hand is pretty good, but still. So I can still make this work, but it is going to be awful and expensive and messy. (ugh, this is what I get for trying to play blue like it is red).

Nooooooo! I was gonna do 13 damage on T3!

Seriously, look at what I almost got to do after the game. This was my “messy painful making-the-best-of-a-bad-situation play”. Also, w/ brick thief you could even bump that to 14 + have a blocker grin.

Thoughts

Mostly a rebuilding turn. At this point I figure I’m probably pretty solidly ahead, so the name of the game is to get further ahead. Knocking down Drak was definitly priority 1, but it did mean I couldn’t get knight out (not willing to skip a worker 2x, once is bad enough). Still I have two of them circulating so I can hopefully get one out next turn. After that just keep doing manufactured truth and mirrors, maybe with art of war as a closer.

Thoughts

So I sort of feel like this turn was treading water. I mostly cleared the board, but I also put pirate back to a full hand.
Also, since Pirate is on T2, the onus is on me to start getting base damage in and that isn’t happening yet.
My tech was kind of a hard choice. Generally I try to worker the card that I think has the least future utility (which is traffic cop)
…but in this case I’m just waiting for for 7/2 overpower to coming crashing through and wreck my face, so having chump blockers to limit overpower could be worth it …?
