Casual: ARMed_PIrate ([Truth]/Anarchy/Demonology) vs. Jadiel ([Discipline]/Future/Truth)

Actually, ignore my whole turn above. Just realised I can’t summon Grave, because Tech II is down. Which throws a bit of a spanner in the works… I’ll redo my turn tomorrow - too tired now!

Attempt no. 2!

Once again screwed by the Technician draw, which was my second TQ, which I was hoping to play next turn to CM with Gargoyle.

Well, I didn’t get to use this deck’s gimmick, which is just sad. But Dark Pacting myself now has a good chance of getting me down to killable range while drawing into a Chaos Mirror I can’t use this turn. So I’m going to try to start base racing him and protecting Zane. As long as I draw CM next turn, I can take his Tech II out again. With all the money he’s been floating, the game ends as soon as he has Tech II up.

I’m belatedly teching in Mind Control, and he has to have done the same, right?

I’m wishing I’d chosen Hound back when. Extra HP would be nice.

…Bad luck on the draw, no CM. Well, I still have a 50/50 chance of getting it when he kills Vandy.

Ouch. I think that’s game, but we’ll play it out.

[details=Thoughts][spoiler]
Well, I’m pretty sure I’m toast, but I got the luckiest draw ever. If by some miracle my Tech II, my Tech Lab, and my base are still intact, I have 11. Which is just enough for Zane+CM+TQ+activate Gargoyle. If he plays a hive, then that won’t work. And because of the tower, the monkey won’t work. But. There’s a tiny amount of hope.

Side note, I forgot all about my gargoyle. Might have been better to kill one of his units.

GG, that was my craziest game of codex in a while. If you don’t mind being given a pointer, Chaos Mirror works really well on Gargoyle (you used it on Traffic Director on T5, but I’m pretty sure it would have been better on Gargoyle). I made a lot of mistakes that game also… My tech choices were not good :blush:

Great game! And really well-played on your part! (Certainly after you got some sleep, even if there might have been misplays early.) I see why folks play Discipline now. Grave doesn’t excite me, but man, the Tech I is so solid!

Yeah, I built the whole deck around CM+Gargoyle/Traffic Director+Terras Q, but the draws and your plays kept making playing TQ not worth it or a really bad idea. So I was excited about the 18-atk Gargoyle, but for some reason I forgot that that also meant it would have been a 6-attack Gargoyle if I swapped Rambasa to it in T5. That would have freed up the Traffic Director to poke your base or Tech I or kill your mirror or patrol, which would have at least made killing Zane and maxing Quince more expensive (maybe killing Zane impossible if I took out the mirror?). Which is all to say: thanks much for the pointer! I’ll definitely remember it in the future. And I’m glad it was exciting on your end!

I think that even though I never got the combo to go off, I came close enough to show that it could be viable, so I’m going to try this deck out again some time. For now I’m going to read over your tech choices, then in a few days go check out how @Castanietzsche fares with his white ninja version of the same combo. (:

Let me know if you want to do this again sometime!

I made a lot of mistakes with my teching I think. Spectral Hound would have been really good against you, and I should probably have teched those over Twins (though Discipline Tech I is indeed very good - Sparring Partner in particular is a lot better than I originally thought). I don’t know why I didn’t - I guess I saw Vandy and thought you’d have Deteriorate?!? I think I’m too used to playing against Black starter!

I spent too many tech choices on cards to win the game at tech II when I should have spent more on getting to Tech II! I kept underestimating your tools to keep me off tech II. I was scared of Teras Q also, when I’m not sure I needed to be. You really need 10 gold for it to work (Teras + Zane + Mirror), and I think I’d forgotten that you can’t Mirror him. I’m not sure I would have brought Qunice out on T4 if I hadn’t thought I needed to kill the mirror. Having said that, he did a lot of work! I’d never realised how powerful he is as a hero, but both this game and my recent one against Kaelii have really showed me what he can do. Teching Free Speech in earlier might have helped stop more of your shenanigans also.

I have real problems clicking with the White Starter. In hindsight workering Fox Primus was pretty stupid, the game would have been very different if I’d kept it and workered Viper instead. I really like Grave as a hero, but I think overall I prefer Balance over Discipline in this deck.

Happy to go again, but I think I’ll switch to [Balance]/Future/Truth. I think it’s my turn to go first?

1 Like

Being scared of TQ was reasonable. I don’t have to play him the turn I CM him. I just need him to stick around (reasonable, given his HP) along with Gargoyle (reasonable, given its Indestructible) or Traffic Director (less reasonable, but damage is harder to stop if he’s around) for a turn, then bring in Zane the turn after. I was saving up enough to do it early, but had to spend more to deal with Grave before he pulled out his stupid sword to headshot the beast.

Your Omegacron shenanigans against Kaelii were fantastic to watch. Yeah, I’m beginning to respect Q, as much as I dislike him.

Yeah, I’m up for another if you are, and always happy to play second. (: Let’s see some Midori!

ETA: I’m assuming you’re still playing [Truth]/Anarchy/Demonology. If not, I reserve the right to make changes to my turn! :slight_smile:

I have no idea what I’m doing with this hand. Illusions are so bad against green starter, and that means Aven+Newsman is not Great. I maybe should have played Newsman instead of Quince, but I wanted a building and I really wanted an extra body. No 1-drops is a bit harsh. Also, I really wanted to arrest that stupid Prospector for mining without a license, but I think it would have hurt me as much or more than it hurt him. This line opens Zane and/or Vandy for next turn, in addition to Tech I. I want to play Jail next turn, but it’s probably a really bad investment since he has Vir and Assimilate available to him. It’ll probably be hero, Tech I, Traffic Director.

[/details]

That’s an interesting start, but I don’t think it’s legal. You have to pay the multicolour penalty on the first building you build, so your HH costs 3…

My Turn 2 became significantly worse after making Turn 1 legal (go figure!) but still not bad. I actually like Bluecoat, even if he’s overcosted, and I needed the extra defense. I miss having pillage against Green. Experimenting with the Soul Stone. Not sure where I’ll use it, but I always like it. Stoned Newsman isn’t bad, and Stoned Gargoyle with a CM a bit later could be 7+ damage right at his base.

Hah. I have lost this so badly. Still. I’m going to keep on keepin’ on to see if I can learn anything.

You may be wondering why I suicided Zane on the Basilisk. Well, I can’t play anything that can stop the little bugger (all I have is Tech 0 and flying available now), so it’s going to take out a hero next turn no matter what. But since my only hero is Quince, who has only 1 attack, it’ll take something else out the turn after. At least this way it’s a trade (giving him levels), not a 2-for-1 (giving him levels, maybe twice).

[details=Thoughts][spoiler]
First, I’m realizing that last turn I should have just put Quince in Elite instead of bringing Zane out. I forget the Elite slot exists, but it’s such a strong place for weak heroes.

Second, things aren’t quite as bad as I thought. But Gargoyle maybe out for a turn next turn regardless. If the Soul Stone ruling comes down in my favor, then it’ll be available to be a CM target. (Well, it will no matter what, but I’ll only get use if Gargoyle isn’t exhausted.) I’m now officially losing the econ race as player 2. Expected against Green, but skipping worker is rough.

I patrolled in SQL because he’d have to wipe his whole board to take Vandy out, or have a pump spell or spore shambler or something. And since when does green play pump spells? Green never plays pump spells, right? That would be so out of the ordinary that it’s not even worth considering. At least he can’t pump his dog. Only I have that power, with my silly mirrors!

ETA: I’m pretty sure that you can choose to avert doom with Soul Stone, so feel free to play next turn with an unexhausted Gargoyle unless you want to wait for an official ruling
