LLL 2: robinz ([Present]/Necro/Truth) vs. jalias ([Present]/Peace/Finesse)

@jalias - another round of random decks then, although at least we’ve both got the same starter deck. GLHF

Thoughts

I’ve never come across this deck that I’ve been given, and I’m not sure that I understand it.

I have heard of [Necro]/Blood/Truth though, and I think this may be a variation of it. Present Tech 2 is clearly stronger than either Truth or Necromancy, and it has some resemblance to Blood in having lots of immediate effects. Although as I’ve found to my cost in playing my own invention, Present Tech 2 is really gold-hungry, so I’m not sure I like being forced into playing it as P1.

I’m puzzled by the use of the Purple starter though. The whole reason that Black is the starter in Necro/Blood/Truth seems to be because of Graveyard - playing Crashbarrows from there is obviously awesome (particularly when you can mirror them!), and it could be similar, albeit a lot more expensive, with Hyperions or Tricycloids. But I can’t do that, as I don’t have the black starter, but the purple instead. That is mainly a good defensive starter, with some time-rune tricks that are more or less irrelevant unless you’re playing monopurple. Other than Nullcraft, I don’t really see what the puple starter does to help this deck. [I’m aware Battle Suits is a thing too, which also helps a few Present units - but I still think I’d rather have the black starter.]

I’m even less sure about his deck - although I played against Past/Peace/Finesse last time and this has 2/3 specs the same and the same starter. PastPF seemed like a weaker version of PPA (although still strong enough to blast past my ineffective experimentation), but PresentPF is probably quite different. It doesn’t have all Prynn’s annoying tools for me to deal with, but of course Present has plenty of shenanigans even without it being the Tech 2 option. I wonder whether he’ll go for Peace or Present at Tech 2?

Anyway, I got a pretty rubbish opening hand. I briefly considered trying Plasmodium, before realising that, even as P1 on T1, it would be pretty stupid with only Time Spiral and Tinkerer to help it along. (And me not likely to play Geiger until at least the midgame.) I can’t play both a unit and a hero because of the purple starter’s tragic lack of any 1-drops. Since I’m not a fan of a blank 2/2 to start with (I may well play Battle Suits later, but probably not on T2), in the end I’ve just gone with Nullcraft to have a swipe at his base. Our two nullcrafts will probably end up just cancelling each other out though (at least until he gets the Peace engine going and dumps a load of runes on his). Next turn I’ll worker Mox and play Fading Argo, as well as probably Garth to get a skeleton.

Not entirely sure of the detail going forward, but the general idea will be Present Tech 2 with Mirror backup.

So once again I nearly forgot to build Tech 1! Garth + skeleton seems a nice efficient play, particularly when River can sideline my patrollers, but in the end I decided that since there were none of Garth’s spells that I particularly wanted to tech at this stage (ND is ineffective early on, DG too expensive and lacking good targets, and LB seems a bad idea when I want to get to Tech 2 quickly), I needed to build it so I can play the Tech 1 units that I’m going to have to tech.

I was initially going to tech Argonaut along with BC, both because I love them anyway and because of Battle Suits - but I’m going to be struggling for cash this game so I threw in a Spectral Hound for cheapness. He doesn’t actually have much that could target it in the early game (just Boot Camp and River’s midband, as far as I can see) - and if I patrol it in Scavenger or Technician (or perhaps even Lookout) it’ll still be a net gain for me.

Just playing all my good stuff now, when it’s in the same hand. I can’t profitably attack, since he has Mox in SQL and I can’t kill anything else. Of course next turn is the last I’ll get with Fading Argo (if he survives till then), but I have enough other stuff to attack with that I should get value from that. Next turn I’ll have to build Tech 2, and probably won’t do much else. I should have enough on board to attack and defend with that it doesn’t matter. I can spend my other gold on levelling up Garth and/or building a Tower.

Once Tech 2 is functional and protected, I’ll bring Quince in and try to start smashing through. I’m also going to start teching a few spells - Doom Grasp, and perhaps Nether Drain or Free Speech.

I’m surprised he hasn’t played and patrolled his Nullcraft yet. I’m sure it will happen soon (either that or a Tower), because these pings to his base - or whatever else I feel would profit me - will soon start adding up.

I’ve been through quite a few versions of this turn. Eventually I realised I had to kill River - because the threat of Discord on all my skeletons was too annoying. (It’s also a great tool against my Mirrors later.) The skeletons dying wasn’t so bad in itself if I patrol them in Scavenger and Technician - the bigger danger was that it would allow River to kill Garth. I had to involve Garth himself in the attack in order to kill River - and if he attacked River herself then he would be left at 2/1 and easy prey to a Nullcraft. So that is why I’ve sacrificied by own Bone Collector. He can at most attack with Nullcraft and Mox next turn, so my 2 skeletons keep me safe for now.

Next turn I’m sure he’ll build a Garrison and flood his board with cheap units. But I’ll have enough money for Hyperion plus Battle Suits plus max Garth to get a Tech 1/2 unit of my choice (most likely Tricycloid), so I should be able to do a fair bit. You’ll notice that I’m teching Quince spells - notably Hallucination, because I’ve realised it will be great in combination with Tricycloid.

There were a few different options here. Unfortunately I was a single gold short of the most fun one - that of summoning Quince before the Hyperion, killing Onimaru with the Tricycloid to get the free levels, then maxing Quince and only then playing the Hyperion, to get a free hasted mirror copy. Sadly that would have taken 10 gold.

I’m relatively happy that I’ve made what I think are the best plays. The biggest decision was whether to kill Onimaru or the Garrison with the Tricycloid. I went for the Garrison because it just seems more important to his strategy. Even if he has a second one that’ll cost him 3 more gold. Oni is a heavy hitter, but he’s expensive to level up, and I’m still safe this turn provided I remember that Elite Training gives the chosen units Sparkshot (that I hope explains my slightly strange-looking patrol, I’d have rather had skelly in Elite but it’s no huge loss). I don’t think there’s any way for him to kill anything other than my 3 patrollers next turn, so I should have some fun with mirror Hyperions (or a mirror Nullcraft I suppose). Plus I can play Free Speech to nullify a lot of the danger posed by Onimaru. If only a mirror Tricycloid could come with time runes I could have had much more fun this turn!

I had to edit a bit more since I was rather defenseless. And then the script stopped working somehow and generated some nonsense. I hope everything is in order now.

where did Neo Plexus appear from? He’s listed as SQL on your board, but you didn’t have him last turn, and I don’t see you listing having played him, and also all your gold appears to be accounted for.

Hey ho - I’m suddenly in a pretty bad way because I somehow forgot about the power of Drill Sergeants, particularly in combination with Nullcraft.

My response feels pretty inadequate, although it’s the best I could do. I found a fun way to kill off the Sergeant he perhaps carelessly left a load of runes on - but it was rather expensive. I traded Hyperion for Plexus first because I needed to be able to react to what I drew - I’d have rather it was Dreamscape (would have been a much better tech than Hallucination, and I’ve now teched 2 of them), because if I keep that in play he can no longer transfer his DS runes without killing his own units! The crying shame is that I didn’t have enough cash to afford a second unit after mirroring the DS, which would have let me kill off a second one of his units - either than oversized Nullcraft or his second Sergeant.

At least I’ve still got my own Nullcraft to block his - although he could clear it with Boot Camp, at the cost of making it bigger later (but still much smaller than his - and he only needs to play 1 more unit to make his able to 1-shot my tech buildings if I don’t have any fliers myself). My patrol is OK for at least this turn - except if he has Elite Training to give his guys sparkshot.

I was sad not to play Free Speech, but I think killing off his 6/5 sergeant was more important. I could also have done it with a mirror Hyperion and a second attack, likely from the skeleton - perhaps that would have been better, but I was seduced by the chance of drawing Dreamscape from my “real” Hyperion so I’d already sacced it and got new information, and it would be unethical to go back now.

[Next hand looks pretty good, I just really hope he doesn’t break my Tech 2. Oh, and I won’t have enough money to play everything I want anyway. But if Quince stays alive too, just Tricycloid plus Dreamscape would be quite good…

aaaaaand only 10 minutes after posting this do I suddently remember again about Discord. If he has that in hand I think it’s GG]

I think I can see a couple of problems with your post:

You should be discarding 3 I think, not 2. You ended last turn with 3, then drew from Technician. You played Garrison (putting you back at 3 cards), then never played anything else from hand without drawing a replacement. Did you forget to draw from Technician?

Onimaru is still a 2/3 at level 3 - he doesn’t hit midband till level 5.

However, these are mere quibbles - because I can’t possibly see a way back at this point. I needed Quince to live (and even then I was most likely dead anyway, but I was finally set up for the Dreamscape/Tricycloid combo).

I never seem to be able to cope with the Peace board flood. GG, and good luck in the rest of the tournament. @EricF

GG and good luck to you as well !

Onimaru was LVL 5 from me killing both Garth and Quince, and at some I missed to hit draw 1 apparently. I don’t seem to get along well with the PbP format, I do way more mistakes than in actual play.
