[XCAFS20] Round4: Nekoatl [Growth]/Strength/Truth vs FrozenStorm [Bashing]/Discipline/Ninjutsu

Neutral Starter:

Spark costs 0 (instead of 1)
Fruit Ninja is a 3/2 (instead of 2/2) and keeps Frenzy 1

Bashing:

Troq midband becomes topband and can deal 1 damage to any building (not just a base)
Troq midband becomes readiness, level range is 4-7 instead of 5-7
Troq maxband becomes Overpower
The Boot becomes “Trash an opposing Tech 0 or Tech I unit. Trash this card”
Intimidate changes from “Give a unit or hero -4atk until end of turn” to “Give a unit or hero -3atk/-1hp until your next upkeep”
Final Smash cost reduced to 3

Green Starter:

Ironbark Treant ability becomes “-1 ATK/+1 :psblueshield: while patrolling” (rather than -2 ATK/+2 armor)
Rich Earth gains “Arrives: Get a 0/1 wisp token. While you have 10 or more workers, this gains “tap: make a wisp””

Growth:

Giant Panda is a 3/4 (instead of 2/4)
Might of Leaf and Claw grants +3/+3 (instead of +5/+5). Also, Might of Leaf and Claw gains the Healing 1 keyword (even when not yet active)

Truth:

Spectral Tiger gains Resist 1
Spectral Roc gains Resist 1
Hallucination Changes to: Spell - Summon :target: Target up to 2 units or heroes. Summon a 0/X Hallucination token for each target, where X is the current HP (factoring in any buffs, debuffs or damage) of the target. Destroy these at your next upkeep.
Dreamscape Instead of “all units are illusions” this becomes “Arrives or Upkeep: mark up to 5 units. These units are illusions until your next upkeep, even if Dreamscape is removed from play”. Also gains "Tap: Create a Mirror Illusion (max 2). Still channeling, still cost 3.
Quince Midband ability now costs 1 (instead of 2)
Mind Control Cost reduced to 4 and can attach to any unit, including tech 3s

Discipline:

Versatile Style has these 4 abilities (improved, still costs 2):

  • Destroy an Upgrade
  • Disable a Hero, or a Unit with Flying
  • Repair 4 damage from a building
  • Your Discipline hero is a Detector until your next turn

Focus Master - Changes to 2 cost, ability becomes “All your patrollers gain +1armor”
Hero’s Monument - Daigo Stormborn has Haste in addition to his other abilities

Ninjitsu:

Fuzz Cuddles is a 3/3
Inverse Power Ninja ability adds: “up to a maximum of -5/5”, so it bottoms out as a 1/1 with a board flood and can’t get itself killed
Flying Fox is a 3/2
Masked Raccoon is much improved: 2 cost, 3/4. “Masked Raccoon has Swift Strike while you control another Ninja. Masked Raccoon is Invisible while you control another Cute Animal”

Ninjutsu, eh? If he goes that route, I’ll want Eyes to counter invisibility. Well, I’m glad to see Rich Earth on T1, but it’s a shame I couldn’t have Prospector to play alongside it.

Thoughts

I suppose the choice to use Ninjutsu with Neutral starter is to take advantage of the buffed Fruit Ninja. It does seem quite strong now. He likely will have Messenger next turn. Hmm… I can use Quince’s midband to copy Legendary units for $1 without worrying that Mythmaking will be destroyed and discard the original, using Dreamscape to produce Mirror Illusions. Not bad, so I’ll prep Spore Shambler to pop faux-Illusion units for me. Guess I’ll throw out the Prospector as well, with Shambler as Elite to make it extra hard to deal with. Not sure if he’ll take the Wisp, but if he does, it’ll refill my hand. Worst case scenario is Bloom Setsuki, she and Spark kill Shambler, Messenger kills Wisp, and Tenderfoot kills Prospector… but that’s 3 cards. I have a chance to draw both of my starter spells next turn as well, so if he leaves Setuski vulnerable without clearing my board, I may be able to finish her off. Seems like an acceptable level of risk.

Thoughts

Ugh, somehow I missed the Ninja tokens getting haste even though I specifically checked for it?!? Gaah! Well, it’s not like a Tower would help all that mjch anyway… it can only stop and shoot one of them, and Setsuki would have just destroyed it anyway without the Boulder, so this is better. My concern is that he’ll have another one of those, and use 8 ninjas to destroy my tech buildings, locking me out of playing Eyes. Is there anything I can do to stop that? … Not really, but if I play Galina and Quince, maybe I can get an opportunity for a counter-attack, or at least divert attention away from my buildings. Bonus in that even if he kills Quince, I won’t give away levels from it. Double bonus that Eyes will get shuffled in before he can kill a unit, so if my Tech II does survive, there’s a good chance I’ll have one available to drop. I should also deploy the Tree next turn if possible, though I have serious doubts about the viability for that… we’ll have to see how it goes. Hmm… maybe I shouldn’t patrol with Galina? I mean, he’ll probably just sac a Ninja into it and have Setsuki assassinate her… or Bloom Setsuki and not even spend the Ninja. Supposing I don’t, though, he’ll be able to hit my backline even without casting his other ult, so I think I have to. Mrgh.

My Thoughts

I’m going to gamble the tech was Thunderclap and not Free Speech (why would you stick Quince out there to die if you’re teching free speech?) and leave Quince up, and just go ham at the base. I’m okay if Sets is silenced for a turn, I’m not okay if she gets killed by a buffed boulder w/ a clapped free path.

Alternatively I could go Wither + Bloom, attack w/ 7 ninjas, leave one patrolling with Tendy, spark and smack boulder w/ Fuzzy… Or Bloom + HH? Yeahhh, actually that rocks even more, makes Sets pretty unkillable, gives me something to do next turn in case of Free Speech. teching Iron Man and Rambasa for Thunderclap safety

I’ll fold here. I should have immediately gone for Free Speech when I saw you max Setsuki, but I’m just in the habit of not considering a Free Speech lockdown as a viable option in the early game, both because of the unreliability of drawing it every turn, and because of how impactful the drain of $2 and a card each turn are. In hindsight, though, even without the devastating ultimate spam, Setsuki’s abilities are so valuable that shutting them down even momentarily would probably have been worth the cost, and if I could have somehow worked in a kill on her (no idea how I could have fit that in, though), I could have recouped some of the cost. At the very least, I can say in hindsight that not spending those resources on Free Speech was not a viable tactic. I mean, my only other option was to try to use spells aggressively, but I don’t think that would have worked either. Anyway, GG WP!

GG WP @Nekoatl! Rich Earth provided a safe opening for Sets so I went for it. Definitely was worried about Free Speech or Thunderclap getting a buffed Boulder to her, but yeah without hero removal (and with Fuzzy, Bloom and Wither for good hero helping) Sets max rush made sense to force a Free Speech tech or just snowball.

GL next round!
