I start with 13 gold.
Hire Orpal ($11)
Graves throws sword at Vir
Orpal gains 2 levels
Cursed crow kills neo
Abomination attacks your base for 6
Midband Orpal ($10)
Orpal sacrifices the abomination to -1/-1 the crow.
Everything else attacks for 10 more damage
I can also cast true power of storms for another 10. ($7).
So, interesting game. My first tournament win. I’m just reading through your perspective. Do you still think the argonaut is a good lead, rather than a neo? As I understand it, that gave up your initiative as long as I just don’t leave too many openings. Also, is it normal to skip teching tier 1 units like that?
Q - Do you still think the argonaut is a good lead, rather than a neo? As I understand it, that gave up your initiative as long as I just don’t leave too many openings.
A - Not sure I understand your question. I didnt have neo on Turn 1, so fargo was my only real choice i felt good about.
Q - Also, is it normal to skip teching tier 1 units like that?
A - Not really. It’s a unique strategy where you try and load up runes on Mox. I made a mistake though and forgot you had morningstar flagbearer, which is the perfect counter to it.
Q - What do you mean comeback? Was I ever behind?
A - Well, I was either one attack from Oni or a single Pirate Gunship away from winning. That’s all i meant.
All in all, it was a very close game. Nicely played!
Yes, nicely played. I thought I saw neo in your turn 1 hand. My point is only that fargo doesn’t get full value if you don’t need him for defense, so I just set up to wait him out, so by the time he left the board I naturally had an advantage.
To be honest, I wasn’t expecting you to tech spells first, so the flagbearer was just something that couldn’t be sniped easily with a nullcraft.
oh, you’re right. well, i think my mindset for fargo was, “i will always take fargo over neo because fargo has 1 extra health. he rarely stays around long enough to fade out”
I was surprised that Leaky didn’t cast Snapback on Onimaru on Turn 4. It seemed to work out though, and I guess playing the Gorgon is better if codexnewb hadn’t drawn Art of War. Pretty happy to see True Power of Storms be viable in this deck.
Oh, and I didn’t snapback Oni immediately because I knew that the (threat of) the abomination would clear the way the following turn for maybe the Gorgon to sweep in or something. I didn’t really think about the ultimate though, so maybe I should have thought harder about it. If you had taken out my tech 2 with your super Oni, it might have gone better for you.
Yes, but in retrospect it wasn’t enough, and I would be guaranteed to draw snapback again before it was enough. So, maybe this sketchy play was correct since it maximized tempo?
I think it’s at least a reasonable play: Leaving maxband Oni alive is painful, but it let you put down a Gorgon and an extra hero, so it’s good for keeping up on the board, even if it left your base health a little fine.
