Well, at least I’m sort of on home turf with this starter. Vandy’s going to be a pain, though, maybe I open with Orpal in Elite here. Speading Plague would be nice against Metamorphosis if it didn’t also add + runes, but Carrion Curse might help me catch it before it gets played. I might need to resort to Tower + Polymorph: Squirrel. I’d usually expect Bone Collectors to come out first, but maybe Sickness + Abomination discourages that.

Black can’t do anything against upgrades, so my default spec choice would be Growth here, but I don’t have great options for unit spam outside of Pandas. I might need to Circle in a Basilisk while I set up. Or maybe I go for the silly option, and go for Plague Lord to make it a rune-spamming race. We’ll see.

Drawing both my spells sucks here, and I was also hoping to open with Rich Earth + Orpal. I can’t just Argagarg out either, because the Wisp could get Deteriorated and he’d be a sitting duck. My choices are suicidal Orpal in Elite to get runes on Vandy, and Forest Favor on Midori, also in Elite to trade with midband Vandy. I’m not sure I like either of these, but the latter seems like the better option, the Tree would just be picked at by the Pestering Haunt. Workering Verdant Tree over the Ironbark Treant: the latter’s vulnerable to Sacrifice the Weak right now, but if I go for Might of Leaf and Claw he might be worth the cost/risk.

6 attack on Bomber’s board, if I put Tiger Cub and Merfolk Prospector down I have 7 health before patrol bonus and spells, the latter of which are surely coming. I’m not feeling hopeful.

I think this patrol as a good as I can do: Prospector in the back so it would have to be hit with Deteriorate for the Tiger Cub to be hit with Sacrifice the Weak, Tiger Cub in SQL so it trades 2-for-1 without Deteriorate or levelling Vandy, Midori still in Elite so Vandy can’t safely hit him. I’m still not confident about Midori surviving, so Sickness is going in to take out surviving units, along with Crypt Crawler to trade with Bone Collectors (Tiny Basilisk is too easy to neuter with Deteriorate). If Vandy’s levelled, I’ll be looking at a quick Carrion Curse.

Unfortunately, I have to worker the Playful Panda, which makes shooting for Growth rather questionable.

No units in hand, this is bad. I guess I have to risk building Tech II now, otherwise I’m out of the game anyway. Do I want to shoot for an Abomination, or go for a Potent Basilisk? Both do decent jobs against high-level heroes, but the Basilisk can’t be hit with Doom Grasp or Shadow Blade, just Sacrifice the Weak. For further techs, Gorgon could help with the card drain, Plague Lab might be an intended synergy because of the runes from Forest’s Favor and Spore Shambler (and Blooming Ancients, but I don’t like my chances in Growth right now). On the other hand, Balance has… very expensive units to get sacrificed, for the most part. I could go for mass fliers, although Disease I has good options for countering them. Or I could try using Sickness to sneak out some Horselords without them defecting, since they’re not too expensive. I’ll try that.

Wow, these discards are awful. I think my choices are to just tech in stuff to deal with Vandy, and hope I draw something good with the Young Treant, or to build Tech II, and put Midori with a + rune in front to block. Given there’s probably a Metamorphosis incoming, I think I need to risk the former. I could also build both a Tech II and a Tower, but then I need to skip a worker if I want put anything into patrol, and I need to if I want the Tech II to survive. The tower at least buys me a turn from invisible-hero hell, I’ll do that. Waiting on the decision whether to tech in any Horselords until I’m more likely to have attack supremacy.

Hmm, hadn’t noticed that Bomber skipped a worker too. Either he’s teching in extra cards to switch gameplan, or he skipped to destroy the Tech II because there’s something in Balance II he doesn’t want to see. I’m guessing the Basilisks. Which Tech II would he would to tech into to deal with those? Probably Disease for the Gorgons, or possible Demonology to smash through them with Blackhand Dozers, although those are vulnerable to Faerie Dragons. I guess we’ll see soon enough, if I survive that long.

Meh. Buffing the Plague Spitter in SQL hopefully means it should either hit a hero or kill the Gargoyle in a way that bypasses the Soul Stone, unless it gets hit with both Deteriorate and Shadow Blade. Teching in the other Spreading Plague: if I don’t hurry up and stop those heroes soon, then Bomber can just go for base. Putting in the other Basilisk too, in case he’s trying to shoot for Zarramonde to close things out.

Looks fine to me, well played! I didn’t react to Vandy quickly enough and spent the whole game in catch-up. Bringing out Midori was an error.
