Teaching the ropes casually: HolyTispon vs. FrozenStorm

Not to suggest I’m not grateful for the work people have put into both the spreadsheet and codexcarddb.com - both are amazing and very very good.
In any case, I’ve redone my turn. No imp on turn 2! Big reveal!

This is pretty much a slam dunk, and I’m also beginning to see how a Mox with Spirit of the Panda is going to be a terror XD Hero’s Hall will be coming in short order, Birds gotta come first though!

Cool for Vandy to go killer but she can’t then patrol after. Not that it really matters, I don’t have much for haste, but just an FYI (she only gets readiness after Metamorph)

So he’s opting for Hero’s Hall, that’s cool. I’ve got birds down and next turn Arg will come to Rook’s aid. Should be able to get some hero kills

Right. I actually changed my turn around - first dealt with Fargo by StW but then decided it was more efficient to attack with Vandy so I should have also taken her off patrol. Sorry about that. Will post a turn shortly.

I’m grabbing an Earthquake b/c that’s a primary threat now, and a Stewardess to help plow up skeletons in the way (also leaves him less to sacrifice to Omegacrons and is a decent blocker for them). Next turn we max Rook and get Arg to help plow the road with Panda Spirit.

And a fortunate Boulder draw as well, gives some insurance against giant robots.

You’re not a betting man, it seems to me.

[details=My Thoughts]
I think this pretty well hangs him out to dry, unless he’s got a Free Speech but even then I’ve got enough units down to slam back next turn. Thought about wiping up Vir and the Glaxx instead but why when Tech 2 is his primary path to victory? Just lock that down and I’m smooth sailing in the skies
[/details]

I think that just might be GG. I’m so far behind and I don’t see how I can keep my tech 2 up, and even if I put my hive down on the deck to draw dark pact, that won’t help me.

I think that’s an accurate assessment, I’m drawing into Earthquake so Free Speech is really your only out and I think it delays the inevitable more than actually turns the game around.

I don’t think you played particularly poorly, though I think Hounds are probably a good choice at tech 1 against this deck: unless Arg is already down and able to use his midband, it lacks cheap targeting for tech 1 units (Stewardess obviously makes quick work of skeletons).

I’m not sure what you planned to do with that Vir peek, though. You wouldn’t have gold for the Void Star or Hive. I think your best bet was to get Omegacrons down on turn 4, and survive base killing long enough to get them activated. You combo them with a Free Speech, and you can ace Rook with just one of them. Building the tech 2 on turn 3 though is risky board position conceding against Rook, as is bringing heroes out and not being aggressive with them.

I’m happy to switch sides and take P2, or play another deck, or stop playing all together, whatever you’d like

Thanks - since Jaidel is now back and my MMM is in full swing as well as CAMS, I’ll take a break before trying my hand against you. Thanks for the games - really fun times.

Happy to play and always eager to help new players, I want our ranks to grow and thus teaching intermediate strategy is a good thing for me!

It’s awfully kind of you. Even though I understand wanting the player base to grow, it’s not as fun playing with someone with someone who is not on your level. And Codex is such a multilayered game, that I think it’s fair to think that an experienced player will beat an inexperienced one with almost any codex, with almost any draw.

It’s a balance because the most fun way to learn and advance is to just play games and learn yourself. so I want to just play games but obviously it’s frustrating if I don’t know what I’m doing and I feel like I’m playing 2D chess when you’re playing 3D. I like the game though. It’s pretty awesome.

Oh I totally understand that sentiment, and thus have no hard feelings about stopping play for a bit or all together.

My best advice is to just play and spectate a lot of matches, so the tournaments and MMM series I think are the shortest path to improvement. I’ve probably grown the most by drilling matchups over and over with Youngbuck, by playing in all the tournaments, and by watching EricF and other really great players who put their thoughts and secrets in their posts.

Feel free to message me to talk strategy in other casual games you’re playing, or to post-mortem tournament games. Pretty much everyone here is friendly and eager to give advice when solicited

SotP will fall off when mox “dies” btw

Oh Snap you’re right! that was a terrible tech choice lol! I suppose I’d put it on the bird then, but against Black that’s #dangerous

Yeah, SotP Mox would be terrifying if it stayed on, I’m also pretty sure that mox is the reason Fairie Dragon can’t target tech 0 units, 3/1 flying indestructible unit anyone?

Wisps were always what I thought made that an obvious “no”. Too cheap and easy

The one decent Mox / growth synergy that I see is with MoLaC. Mox will always be able to attack and isn’t trashed by MoLaC, so it can help get 1 or 2 more attacks in to activate. Between Mox, Birds, and Nullcraft, this Codex has a good amount of attacks that are difficult to prevent.

Blooming Elm works on Mox too (indestructible 4/4 with overpower is nice), although it would be more rare that you’d tech the Elm without any Tech II units.
