PumpedAaron has an excellent Troq

Yeah, I had hoped to counterpick it with BBB, but he dodged that faceup opening.

:grave: :psfist:  :setsuki: Setsuki got some funky hands, Grave got Queens and TPoS.
:persephone: :psfist:  :onimaru: Persephone lost literally three combats - and Jokered out of one of them.
:degrey: :psfist:  :zane: DeGrey had lots of deGrammage and three 9s in his opening hand (then drew the fourth one) - not going to run out of fuel then. Meanwhile Zane couldn’t find a 2. Annoying.
:midori:  :psfist: :grave: Grave got early TPoS off a turn 2 straight, and I played super conservative until it was gone, taking a lot of throws on the chin. Finally blocked it away and started on a comeback. Super-close and exciting game, 2-vs-4-HP endgame was finally decided by single A checkmate.
:zane: :psfist:  :menelker: Zane is bonkers even when the nans are bad.

Final result 4-1 to ArthurWynne. Good games scymrian, particularly the fourth one!

Caralad vs @Nopethebard

:grave: :psfist: :pschip: :grave: - We both Joker a dodge into Tpos attempts. Grave things
:gwen: :pschip: :psfist: :troq: - I get manhandled
:degrey: :psfist: :pschip: :menelker: - Who cares about having no hand when you’re degrey
:zane: :pschip: :psfist: :rook: - I choke badly, giving up AA for no reason when I had lethal off shens
:troq: :psfist: :pschip: :setsuki: - Rule 101 of this MU. If they ever go low on hand and don’t dump, punish the ninja
:valerie: :psfist: :pschip: :onimaru: - hitting 2 40 damage combos is pretty back breaking.

GG’s Nopethebard.

Forgot that when you do a straight, you HAVE to take the A. That was very frustrating

Do you? If you don’t have aces in your discard?

He pumped a Q with an A, then did a straight as part of the combo leaving him with 1 card. However, he had to grab the A he used to pump as after the combo, it is in the discard.

I didn’t understand why it wouldn’t let me pass and I was basically crippled for the rest of the game

Setsuki > Argagarg
Grave < Menelker
Onimaru > Zane
Valerie < Setsuki
Troq > Troq
Menelker < Gwen
Zane > DeGrey

Game 1 was mostly unventful, going the way Setsuki vs Argagarg does. At one point I had both jokers so I had to pump with one of them in order to dump, but there was no one in the audience at this point to make a big deal about it.
Game 2 was a merciless beating - his Menelker destroyed my hand and my HP in short order, and he won a perfect.
Game 3, he picked Zane, allowing me the delightful chance to CP with my main.
Game 4, I never felt like I could put it together.
Game 5, he led with Troq, and my Onimaru was already spent, so in the funniest moment of the set (to me), I also chose Troq, prompting cries of “THIS IS BULLSHIT” from the peanut gallery (aka @ArthurWynne). The game was fun (I like mirrors honestly) and finished with my faceup Beast Unleashed from neutral.
I don’t think I won a combat in game 6, and in game 7, when he chose to lead with Degrey, I got to bring my secondary to bear in another advantaged matchup.

GGs, Nopethebard! Good to get to play you after chatting in the Discord!

Setsuki often gets rid of jokers because they don’t fit into her game plan

And yet, it’s always funny.

Pumping with the joker can definitely be the right call, it’s good to preserve them when you can of course but it’s best to not be afraid to do it if it’s your only way out!

And Troq is such a big load of bull that the Troq mirror can’t rightly be called anything else, even though it’s a pretty interesting and non-degenerate match-up as mirrors go.

I also got to play my set tonight, right after:

ArthurWynne vs Caralad

:geiger: :psfist:  :troq: Double-blind counterpick! The match dynamics were fairly typical I think.
:zane: :psfist:  :rook: I had a bunch of weird hands this game with very few attacks, but managed to draw enough (including Kings and great Nans, which I got massive value out of) that I could sort of pretend otherwise, and in the end I gold bursted my way to Anarchy and used the threat of that to throw Rook to death. Even with weird hands, Zane is Zane.
:degrey: :psfist:  :setsuki: Caralad totally worked me over this game with the no-mixup mixup, dumping with a Queen and engaging the vortex turn 1, then continuing to play Queen until I was at 20- something while I stubbornly tried to punish throws that never happened - Setsuki still at 70. But when the range finally shifted to throws, the punish was still there. Improbably, deGrey brought it back with huge damage and a couple of crucial reads.

:troq:  :psfist: :onimaru: Going to Troq with the general still at large was a mistake. I took tons of guard crush damage this game and generally learned why it favors Oni, but managed to find some damage with normals and Eagle Totem. In the end I assembled two attached blocks and Beast Unleashed, at a point where we were both at risk of death. Unfortunately the one opening I had, Caralad correctly read me as too chicken and I got a dodge thrown instead. Spent the rest of the game downbacking until I ran out of dodges and lost patience, and played the super raw into a King. RIP the bull.

:midori: :psfist:  :grave: I don’t know what to say other than watch this replay. Great match, total nailbiter. Must have been 10 turns of endgame, if not more. In the end I had the dodge.

Final result: 4-1 to ArthurWynne

Thank you @Caralad for a great set full of close games!

Very close set, down to the wire. Could go for the both sides, but i got more luck with the dice last fight and still was 10 to 10 health in the final battle reveal. OMG here are 14 characters in this set

Got the better matchup against my Troq by having Lum as third fighter.

Before the game, I knew that my opponent had really good Sets and Troq. I remembered that I lied a lot with Quince on QM so my opponent was maybe expecting some lies. My plan was to begin with my main Quince and follow up with Troq counterpicks until Troq appears so I could play Zane.
:quince: :psfist: :pschip: :setsuki: crazy comeback, won on sub9 throw depletion. Unfairest Quince possible, but that’s great to begin with things like that to get psychological advantage on weaker opponents.
:onimaru: :pschip: :psfist: :degrey: degrey lost card advantage quickly but remained very professional and unpredictable.
:lum: :psfist: :pschip: :troq: really close game, could have been killed on beast unleashed on last turn ! I probably couldn’t have defeated that scary Troq without Lum.
:zane: :psfist: :pschip: :grave: I had good draws and crazy outputs on each combat win
:bbb: :pschip: :psfist: :gloria: I began the game with 3 kings and drew the last quickly but had problem to get on range. I think I played the matchup totally wrong. I definitely have to watch some Clannatioy games someday.
:troq: :psfist: :pschip: :midori: I began with a 3-of-a-Kind with 8s but I used them as follow up to throws. I was lucky on combat reveal ! I tried to be the most card efficient as I could to afford blocking as few as possible. I was lucky to draw a lot of quick throws too. Good games mates !

Thanks for the games ! I was lucky tonight, you play great. Maybe you could get more output of your combat wins by blocking more on early game and dodging less. And maybe get more unpredictable too. Your Gloria is really scary, really close to your Troq and your Sets !
Hope to train with you again soon ! I didn’t speak a lot during the match sorry but I really had fun

:onimaru: :psfist::pschip: :grave: KKKK then countered TPOS with 10 ahahah :’) I was -almost- sorry at the end of the game !
:zane: :pschip: :psfist::troq: tight game, finished on a Slipstream Phase vs Eagle Totem
:troq: :psfist: :pschip: :degrey: my opponent didn’t block enough and therefore was predictable after having used many attacks. maybe revealing attack with degrey is better when you’ve a strong followup. interesting match, I saved it to study it someday. I finished with a beast unleashed reveal against his ghost riposte
:quince: :psfist: :pschip::geiger: after so many trials, I begin to feel confident in this matchup. Maybe not to the point I’d give me 5-5 against a Geiger character-specialist but enough to have fun in this hard MU.
:lum: :psfist: :pschip: :argagarg: I didn’t have the occasion to press for extra juice on this game but I dealt good damage with a 21 blackjack followed by Q saving me from a blowfish spike

Thanks for the games mate, I was happy to face a real champion. Hope we’ll meet on grandfinals !
