HolyTispon has been building his tech 1 on T1 the last couple of games, so this time I’ll bring Inspector in early to make sure I tax him.
I’m hesitant about playing Jail next turn, after having it turned against me las turn. Will probably go for Newsman instead, maybe with Lawful Search first.

Thoughts

Inspector is out, so no point in getting tech 1 yet. Maybe I’ll be to kill it before I build my tech building next turn. Maybe not but there’s no point in rushing to build it just yet. Newsman isn’t out so I’m laying down the Battle Suits already. Most of the cards that are useful in this MU enjoy the benefits of BS and so there’s really no reason not to go for it. Also thins my deck. Gonna go down in cards to play Fargo as well. It’s a good counter to Oni and though he might want to arrest it, with a possible Max Gegier and the benefit of the BS, that Fargo is more dangerous and should be respected.
Really hard choice what to worker in this situation. Both TIme Spiral and Temporal Research are extremely useful later in the game, but I think TR has done less for me. NC is not at all great in this matchup but it’s hard to overestimate how useufl it is to have another 1 damage later in the game (also, if he didn’t patrol the inspector in SQL I could have taken it out with NC). that being said, a choice has to be made and it’s NC.

Thoughts

I’m concerned about Nullcraft either killing Inspector or finishing Oni in tandem with Fargo, so I’ll Lawful Search to see if HolyTispon has it.
For my 1st teched cards, I’m going to try something a little bit different. I still haven’t seen HolyTispon deal with a mass of illusions, so let’s see how he handles Hounds.

The good news is, no Nullcraft (nor Temporal Research) in hand, which means I get to keep my guys alive. The bad news is, I drew a Hound a turn early. I can trade Oni for Fargo, play Bigby to stash the Hound, then drop both of them at once next turn. Seems a bit excessive though.
I think I’ll stay on defense for now, and next turn have the option to midband Oni + play Hound. I don’t have to worry about FFighter if I keep my units out of patrol, so I’ll block $1 with Newsman to try and discourage Geiger. Hopefully that doesn’t tip my hand about the illusions.

I hadn’t considered Oni’s negative synergy with illusions. I think I’ll just trade him away here and bring Quince in, for a chance to play Free Speech while teching up next turn.
For my second teched card I’m considering Scribe for the cycle, Flagbearer for the illusion synergy, or just a second copy of Free Speech. Hmm, I think that in the long-term, the extra draw would help me more than having one extra illusion. I’ll probably tech the second Free Speech somewhere down the line, but for now I could do without it.
My patrol is set up to punish bouncing/popping my guys, and protecting Inspector from Nullcraft.

He’s blocking Time Spiral to get rid of my Fargo and Now! to deploy all these illusions. I didn’t get my Stewardess or Sentry and so I can’t do much and am stuck in a bad spot, because an Aven and a copied one can do me real harm. Sentry is a good reaction to Aven and Stewardess woudl have at least removed one of these annoying tech 0 units that can be mirrored. He has so many though! My board position is terrible and I can’t even build a tower. So I’m in deep trouble, and teching Vortoss Emblem to try and do some stuff. the only question is how to patrol?

My gut reaction is to kill Geiger, by either arresting Fargo or digging for MTruth and picking him off from the air. But the Truth is, Geiger isn’t especially scary once he’s used his flicker, given that Now! is banned and there are no interesting TD targets around. And of course, as long as Geiger’s here, the other Purple heroes can’t join in.
So I’m just going to tech up as originally planned. With Scribe, I can even build my hand back up to 5.

Nice, I even get to worker Jail, while drawing Free Speech and MTruth for my next hand, just in case.
Setting up the patrol is hard. Worst case scenario, HolyTispon bounces Newsman with Stewardess ($4), uses Now! ($5) to pop Hound (and/or Aven), and gets through Scribe with the help of Nullcraft ($7). But even then he’ll have to skip a worker to get free levels off of killing Quince. Plus he delays tech 2 and goes down on cards, which I’m perfectly fine with.

He’s blocking Time Spiral, so he’s safe from me getting another rune on Fargo so he’s ok with waiting me out and teching up - when your opponent doesn’t feel the need to trade anything, it’s never good news. I think he might rushing up to Tech 3, thinking he’s safe from Now!s. I can bounce the newsman but I don’t have a Now! in hand, and I didn’t even get the Emblem. I think it’s a good idea to build a HH becuase he’s been trying to make sure Prynn doesn’t hit the board. I also think I should start trading because I’m not in a great spot and Fargo is on a timer. The Stewardess gives be a bit of leeway, and so does getting rid of the Scribe. As things stand, he can’t really break any of my buildings unless he has Arrest + Manufactured Truth (which is not unlikely), or he could use the mirror (and scarifice it) to break my tech 1, which wouldn’t be a bad move but I have to risk something - being behind. I hope he goes for my HH, which will suck but probably a bit less.

Solution: Reteller of Truths! Getting a chance to replay Newsman on a different number somewhere down the road is a bonus.
I’m also jumping on the opportunity to tech Eyes of the Chancellor, with this being the first game in the series in which HolyTispon hasn’t built a tower.

The free speech is hurting. I won one games using Prynn and he has since prevented me from using her by blocking my ability to trade heroes and casting Free Speech. She is crucial for various reasons but I dont’ think he’ll have Free Speech back again so soon (though he did reshuffle) so hopefully she can join again soon with HH out and some gold accumulating. She can kidnap the whisperer and everything is then possible (especially if there’s an emblem). Though the newsman can come back and block, so I’m definitely in a bad spot. I have to switch to using units. I usually tech only one Tricycloid and in order to use temporal distortion but between free speech and newman, I am better off just going for units.

GG. I can do some things but I don’t see how a Tinekerer and Prynn would block enough and you already have close to lethal.

Seems like you had an unlucky draw on T3, which snowballed into a disadvantage in the midgame, and then the back-to-back Free Speech kept you from bouncing back with heroes. That spell is quickly becoming a staple of the match-up for me!
It was interesting to see you play Heroes’ Hall - I tend to think of purple’s heroes as too fragile to justify it.

It was a very frustrating game on my part, to be honest. I felt like I was behind from the first moment and couldn’t keep up. I usually don’t like to play heroes early on but you were deliberately blocking me from replacing my hero and I couldn’t quite get to tech 2 due to the abysmal board state - so I played HH (a pretty small gold investment) to be able to threaten Max Prynn/Geiger even with a hero on board, but the Free Speech was really hurting. I guess the next move in our meta that you’ll be relying on Free Speech and I’ll try to switch to units instead of spells. We’ll see how that works out for us.

I did have a bad draw on T3 but I also went down on cards, so that’s part of the issue. I had an opening to play Battle Suits, which is a pretty good card in this match-up and has been constantly blocked in previous games, so I went for it. I thought I can make up for going down on cards with the fact that BS will be out of my deck but it turned out that it hurt me really badly before I could do much about it.
