[MMM1] GAME 2: P1 White (FrozenStorm) vs P2 Blue (Akiata)

Hopefully this is a little closer than the last game; it’d be a bummer to have this matchup turn out to be so one-sided. GL HF @Akiata !

OK, all the spells. No 1-drops. Can’t safely patrol a hero for fear of Grappling Hook.

I think the only real choice here is whether to summon Bigby or Oni. Oni’s more threatening… Fox Primus in SQL next turn… let’s see.

@FrozenStorm’s turn!

Hmm, if you want to mulligan that turn I’m okay with that; I don’t think it was advisable.

Ok yeah, I’ll take that mulligan, thank you. Not my finest turn, clearly. With a pretty ordinary opening hand, I’m not flush with compelling options. I think just saving my gold is the best option here, so let’s give that a go.

Here’s another P2T1.

OK, all the spells. No 1-drops. Can’t safely patrol a hero for fear of Grappling Hook… in fact, can’t safely summon a hero due to Rook’s midband (thanks for the mulligan there Frozen :slight_smile: )!

Option 1. Play nothing. He can deal say 3 damage to my base, I get to save $4. He’ll play a card, and I’ll have an up hill battle swinging the board my way. Next turn I’d be looking at Aged Sensei, Rook, and maybe, Fox Primus. And I’d be able to play… Aven, BI, TD, Newsy and a Hero. That’s $8 and I’d have $10, so a worker and a tech I and I’m down to 2 cards. It’s a pretty full board, but it’s really toothless, especially as I can’t really prevent a T3 Bird’s Nest to counter Aven.

Option 2. Play Musketeer only, no hero, because as above, it’s unsafe. If SQL, then Rook+Aged Sensei can kill for no damage. Feels like I’m basically out $2, instead of 3 base damage. If Elite, then I can actually inflict 1 damage… to a hero, which seems pretty pointless and is easily remedied. No real benefit to patrolling in the Scavenger or Technician slots… I mean, with technician I could potentially aim to pull, idk, Elite Training out? Free Speech? It’d be a gamble at best, and one without a clear pay off.

So I’ll have to cede board control immediately… and aim to swing this at some point…? Judgement Day seems like an option, but it’s $10 to pull off, and I think I’d need to tech up to start outpacing white’s value.

@FrozenStorm’s turn!

Happens to all of us, not sure I think a straight float is a huge improvement but I do think it’s better than giving up free levels

This is better for Aki than giving away Oni, but still gives me pretty commanding control of the board. It’s a tough spot as Blue P2 against aggro like White P1 though!

I concluded that straight float was the best option available - if anyone has any better ideas I’d be very interested to hear them. Straight float T1 is not a wonderful reflection of the balance of these decks (mind you, I may be overlooking better options). But this turn I’ve got a hand full of units, and money to burn, so let’s see if things balance out here.

So The Plan was to worker Porky, play everything else, grab a Hero, and build Tech I. I’d have a whopping 2 cards in my hand, and be somewhat competitive on the board. Got the cash to play Porky for once, maybe I can do that and keep a card?

Another option to compete for the board is max Oni. Snapback would be pretty devastating, and it’d be very tough to deal with the birds.

Or, don’t bother competing for the board…

Eh, I’ve got all the units in my hand, I guess I’ll play them.

@FrozenStorm’s turn!

I’m a big fan of just play musketeer into scavenger, or even do that and build tech one to feint turn two draw

1 Like

Yeah, a Tech I build isn’t a bad shout. Musketeer into Scavenger is something I considered, but the poor old Bluecoat can be dispatched by White without loss, and I thought the $1 net loss seemed unappealing.

Given that I can now see all the things that WERENT in your P1 hand, I think the float was a reasonable choice. Newsman (on 0) + Oni would be a good choice if you had Newsie, or BI naked in scav just b/c it’s basically free, but I kinda agree that Musketeer isn’t worth putting in Scav; I kill it basically for free and just ends up losing you a gold.

I don’t think Quince is the right choice for hero here, though. He’s not a combat threat

Not too bad for me here, curious what Aki teched w/ Quince but I’m pretty confident I can get some work done here

Agree that Sirus isn’t particularly threatening, but if I’d have played a different hero, I wouldn’t have had the bodies to prevent an assasination via Rook’s midband (and I already took one mulligan :slight_smile: ). So this way at least Quince surivives! Mind you, there’s not a tonne he’s super useful for, but better than giving away free levels.

Thoughts

Myeah, with 2 birds, Aged Sensei (and possibly Sensei’s Advice) there’s a tonne of flexibility in how white can divvy up damage, which makes patrolling very tough. Ultimately, reducing that flexibility by attacking with Aven (rather than patrolling) seemed like the way to go. However, he can just trade a birb to finish Aven off, and that patrol shouldn’t represent any real issues.

Feels a bit as though I can arrange things in such a way as there are fewer ways to clear my patrol, but I can’t actually prevent them all.

Still no good options. Really I’m just trying to put enough stuff in his way that something (maybe the tower?) survives and I can try to claw something back.

I don’t feel like I have any great “swing the game” options available though. Doesn’t seem to be a good solution to protect a hero.

@FrozenStorm’s turn!

On my phone but I mean I can have Rook kill sql birds kill scav and elite, Primus kill techn, Sensei hit tower, partner hit tech 1, Monk hit base, and earthquake you to 7hp, and I think that probably guarantees I can do lethal next turn. That sounds like GG to me, hbu?

Yep, GG! I didn’t have any answers to the questions posed by my first hand. That was a rough one, let’s hope the dealer has better news for us next game.
