Thoughts

This is just about the worst opening hand I can imagine. I think playing Musketeer is marginally better than playing a hero, in that it thins the deck and prevents potentially giving free levels. And it’s not like I’ll have any spells to play next turn, anyway. Jail goes straight into the worker pile, as I don’t see how I could keep it safe.
At least I’m floating 1 gold, which would let me afford tower + Building Inspector next turn, or maybe Newsman + hero, or even Quince + extra Mirror. We’ll see.
Definitely expecting an aggressive response from holytispon here. Fargo or Plexus would both be pretty tough.

His bad opening leaves me wondering what option I should pick. I think it’s best to build a tech 1 building without worrying about the inspector and play a solid defender. if he bothering arresting Fargo, he’ll be dealing me 1 damage (no big deal). Was considering playing Geiger instead, or even playing it with FF to bounce the muskateer - but seems like a lot of gold for little benefit. I want a hero out early on and Geiger is a good choice for that, because of sparkshot and the fact he’s easy to level up (plus he can cast Now!).

Thoughts

I’m dropping Newsman to block Battlesuits. I’m still expecting to lose Musketeer to Fargo+Nullcraft, so I’ll bring Oni in to take the board back afterwards. Also teching a single copy of Elite Training to get rid of a likely Nullcraft, since I won’t be able to afford tower any time soon. It has some nice synergy with Brave Knight’s readiness, and I can even play them together if I happen to draw both next turn.
One thing holytispon could do is get a hero ($2), bounce Musketeer with FF ($4), and then kill Newsman with Fargo+Nullcraft ($6), and still afford a worker ($7). It would hurt, but I’ll be able to strike back with Oni.

holytispon is playing it slow and safe, probably stalling to tech 2?
I could break tech 1 to delay him, by going down on cards: Arrest on Fargo (also kills him barring Time Spiral/Seer), sidline Mox with Musketeer, then either Elite Training or MTruth-ing Aven for the missing damage. Then I could beat holytispon to tech 2, and if I go with Truth, I can race to tech 3 and Gryphons. I think that’s a reasonable plan.
If I go with Elite Training, I have 1 gold left for Building Inspector, but I can’t defend him from Nullcraft. So I’ll go with Aven, and threaten another agressive play next turn (a bit of a bluff, since I’ll want to tech up). I’m sure holytispon will pop Aven if he can (FF if it’s not already workered, maybe a teched spell?), so the obvious thing would be patrolling it in lookout. But I might prefer Scav, so as to be able to afford Brave Knight along with tech 2 next turn.

Thoughts

Strong play by holytispon, saving the Fargo, but it represents a considerable gold investment. I’ll stick with my plan of teching up, and throw in a couple more tech 2 units to increase my odds of drawing one next turn.
Having decided that, there’s not much I can do to protect Oni. I could hit Geiger with Aven to (hopefully) force a trade. Or I could trade Oni on my own terms with Fargo (giving no levels), and bring Quince in his instead. I’ll be optimistic and say it might throw holytipon off?

After the draw: got two tech 2 units and a handy spell, which opens up quite a few options.

Small victories. At least I can say that I saved Fargo…

The way holytispon set up his cycle, I’m guessing he has Tech 2’s in his discard, but not yet in his hand. So one thing I definitely don’t want to do is give him the technician draw. I am however considering trading Aven for Seer (after playing Reteller), to increase my hand size a bit and get to Macciatus (and Gryphons!) faster. I think it’s worth giving him the scav gold, seeing as he could afford teched spells like Now! and Vortoss Emblem for popping my illusions anyway.
It’s something of a risk patrolling just with Tiger and Reteller, but I’m counting on holytispon investing a lot in getting rid of them so as to get at my backline “threats”. Then next turn I can just replay my illusion, preferably buffed by Macciatus, and just hold the line until I get Gryphons.

After the draw: I think I misplayed my patrolling choices. Gold is gonna be more important to me than cards next turn. As it is, I could only afford one unit along with tech 2.
I also completely forgot about Geiger’s midband (and Vir’s topband). With a bit of luck, holytispon could wreck my board.

Yeah I like this game better than our other game.

Yeah, I don’t think I can come back from that… but I’ll give it a shot and see what happens.

Teching Judgment Day X2 to deal with the inevitable tech 2’s that are about to hit the board, but with my bloated deck I have no idea when I’ll draw them. For the present turn, I can only try to stall.

Maxband Oni is an option, though it forces me to skip worker. If only I’d patrolled in scav last turn… The alternative is Oni, tower and Musketeer (on T6!), and floating a little bit. It leaves me in a better spot if my tech 2 survives, but I don’t see that happening without the extra patrollers.

Even so, I wasn’t able to rebreak your tech 2 which means you can get back into the game.

Thoughts

Since my tech 2 miraculously survived, I finally have the option to actually build tech 3. Hooray.
It would leave me with just enough gold to play Macciatus and Reteller, both of which are doomed to die, but might be enough to leave my tech 3 standing? Then I’d have 5/9 odds (after my current unlucky tech draw…) of drawing Gryphon and copying with maxband Quince next turn, which probably still won’t save me, but I think is my best bet.
Let’s crunch the numbers: Reteller+Macciatus is 8 health at best. holytispon has 11 attack showing, which is enough to break through and finish my tech 2. Add another 5 from a likely Hyperion to break tech 3, and I’m locked out of the game.
But what’s the alternative? I could play Brave Knight and a hero instead of tech 3, but other than landing a couple of hits I don’t see how it benefits me.

GG! I won’t blame my opening hand, but I do think my experimenting with Elite Training, Spectral Tiger and early Oni aggression did not pay off. Well played on your part, especially getting good value out of your heroes.

More generally, newsman blocks at $2 not just Battle Suits but also Forgotten Fighter, Temporal Research, Temporal Distortion, Research and Development, and Unphase. This is a non-trivial portion of Purple’s targeting spells, including all the starter set spells that can target opponent’s units (the only other one is time spiral, which can’t target blue units). Which is why Now! is so crucial for the match-up and also so predictable.
