Opening with Geiger to throw him off, as well as put on some pressure with sparkshot and a cheap hero. will switch to Garth as soon as I can, basically, to get the draw engine going.

Whoa, aggressive opening by holytispon. And the black starter spells are scary, even if they cost extra for Geiger.

I don’t see an obvious play here. Tower+Nautical Dog is an ok counter against the weenies, but means conceding the board. For instance, he could Deteriorate the Dog and break my tower straight away - trading $2 and 3 cards for $3/4 and 0/1 card of mine. Hmm, more likely he’ll consolidate with something like Graveyard and tech up, maybe trading Haunt for Dog along the way. I’ll be left with nothing but a tower, which I’m not very keen on, especially with Lobbers likely to hit the board soon.
Brogre+hero would normally be my go-to as P2, but it’s vulnerable to Sac the Weak. For 3 gold and both weenies he could clear my patrol and get free levels for Geiger. OTOH, he’ll be delaying tech 1, and since Garth isn’t on board he won’t be using Lich’s Bargain straight away. Another option is Deteriorate on Brogre, and finishing him with Geiger or Haunt+Jav, which is an ok trade from my side. So this isn’t too bad an option.
Brogre+Dog could be great for striking back (with midband Drakk, if I’m willing to delay tech 1), but again Dog is likely to die to Haunt or Deteriorate, and so if Brogre survives he survives alone. That gives me some flexibility with regards to hero choice next turn, but I’d rather have the option to attack.
The last option I’d consider is Bloodburn(!), anticipating future Lobbers and Lich’s Bargain(s). I could even get two runes on it straight away by suiciding Mad Man. That would naturally feed into a base race plan, with Crash Bombers and later Bugblatters(+frogs). I’m just not sure I’d survive long enough to pull it off: I’m guaranteed to take 3/4 damage next turn, and probably even more on T3 from Lobbers, given that I have few options for patrollers.

I think a more sustainable long-term plan starts with Argos, preferably buffed with Ferocity to counter both Lobbers and Lich’s Bargain. I could then try to beat holytispon to tech 2, and maybe threaten Kidnapping to discourage swingy Present units.

There’s no doubt that LDT holytispon is different than MMM holytispon…

With no tech 1 nor heroes’ hall, he must have teched Geiger spells, probably Now! (Ready or Not seems excessive this early, and TD is a dead draw). So the thing to worry about is hasted Jandra, which together with Geiger can break my tech 1. So I definitely need to patrol with something
Bombaster in SQL stops Geiger but dies to Jandra. With Deteriorate, she could even overpower to a backline hero for Geiger to finish off - healing himself and Jandra by flickering her, as well as readying her for patrol. That again delays tech 1, unless a worker is skipped.
What about just a hero in SQL? That requires hasted Jandra/Imp plus Geiger, and leaves him in the same spot of maxband Geiger plus Demon (healed and ready), but with 1 more gold and card. Meanwhile I float 2g (or hit his base with Rambaster?), which I can use next turn for… what? Argo + hero + spell, if I’m lucky?
On second thought, Jandra+Now!+Deteriorate are pretty unlikely to all be in his hand together, and if he plays them he goes seriously down on cards. So I’ll stick with my first plan. Not sure what my next teched cards will be, probably a spell or two (Bloodlust or Ferocity, depending on whether Drakk survives), maybe an early tech 2 unit?
I’m workering Scorch rather than Pillage because, if holytispon does go for Lich’s Bargain, his gold and base health would be more critical than his patrollers.

After the draw: got both Argonaut and Charge - could make for a mean combo if Drakk survives.

Right, it’s nice to have some options and not have half my starter deck blocked by one of your starter cards. Wasn’t expecting Drakk here. Let see what happens.

Looks like I was able to slow holytispon down and gain tempo advantage, at least for now. Lobbers are likely to make an appearance next, but I’m counting on Argo’s to deal with them. I’m also grabbing the opportunity to kill Geiger, even though it opens up Lich’s Bargain. At least I know I’ll have a turn to play an extra Argo before the zombie outbreak gets out of hand (…famous last words?)
I should probably start thinking about my long-term plan, even though it’ll be another turn before I reshuffle. Present did good work for me last match, but I might want to go cheaper and meaner with Blood this time. Bugblatters will definitely be nice to have if Lich’s Bargain does end up being played. And actually, if Drakk survives to maxband, Feral becomes viable as well.
Hmm, I guess I’ll refrain from deciding just yet, and tech strong combat spells for now. Next turn I’ll probably just drop the 2nd Argo and tech up, although Argo+maxband Drakk and/or frenzied Madman or even heroes’ hall are all also on the table.

Making one cute move isn’t exactly ‘doing alright’. Also here I got punished for my cute moves. I thought of charge, just not with an Argonaut…

I’m having a hard time getting a read on holytispon here. He could’ve afforded tech 2, but he went for tower and Jav instead. Is he so worried about my offensive options, or is he just not counting on getting to tech 2 at all?
Similar question about Garth: if he was planning to play Lich’s Bargain, he would’ve left Garth on the bench until he had it in hand, wouldn’t he? Or did he consider the extra skelly critical for defense.
Hmm, my intuition is that he does care for Garth, not so much about tech 2: he had to patrol with something, so he brought in a hero. If it’s Jaina and she survives, he can’t Bargain next turn, so he went with Garth. Then the tower and extra skelly are there just to discourage me from going after Garth.

If I’m right, I should definitely go after Garth. I could do it with Madman, but then I can’t afford Argo + tech 2 (unless I skip a worker). I don’t want to leave Drakk hanging, so I’ll have to heal him up or play a patroller, and preferably both. In that case I’m not teching up, so I might as well go all in on offense? Maxband Drakk + Argo lets me break tech 1 in addition to killing Garth. Then holytispon’s options are limited to heroes and tech 0’s, none of which really threaten Argo’s (barring spells… I should avoid patrolling technician+scav to play around Now! on Geiger).

I’ll be going down on cards, so maybe tech Desperation? I don’t know if I’ll have the gold to properly capitalize on it, this early. But it would let me get through my bloated discard pile fast, while putting a lot of pressure down. Seems risky. Let’s do it anyway.

After the draw: might be forced to worker Ferocity, unfortunately. Rambaster could be useful for breaking tower, or rebreaking tech 1.

ARg. Argonauts was kind of my plan. Kind of.

I’d really like to tech War Drums X2, but I’m going to respect the threat of Doom Grasp and get Bugblatters instead. I expect them to do good work in 2/3 turns, after I burn through my deck with Desperation and flood the board with cheap units.
For this turn I’m keeping the pressure up, breaking tower and re-breaking tech 1 but leaving Graveyard alone, since it’s only really scary if paired with Lobbers. Lich’s Bargain might finally land next turn, but by now holytispon should be worried about his base health, especially after seeing that I went Blood.
I’m refraining from workering Ferocity, not because I expect to use it, but because it increases my odds of drawing Desperation from ~50% to ~70%. If it so happens that I don’t draw it, I can put some gold into a second hero - probably Geiger to flicker Argo or a hasty unit.

After the draw: ugh, getting both Desperations at once is a bummer, I’ll have to worker one in order to use the other… could still make for a mean play though.

GG! @Bob199
After I posted my turn, I figured I should have patrolled with Geiger and not killed the Rambaster but I don’t think it would have mattered. I made a big mistake early on losing Geiger to the hasted Argonaut and it all went downhill from there. Good job!

Yeah, patrolling Geiger wouldn’t have made a difference. Ogre would’ve just plowed through him, and Rambaster would’ve made up the missing damage to lethal.

I agree that taking out Geiger was a big momentum shift. I’m curious, though, do you think in hindsight that delaying tech 1 on T2 was a good choice? I was scared of Now! on Jandra, but other than that it seems there isn’t much Geiger can do for the Black starter set. The other thing I was really scared of was Lich’s Bargain, to the point of planning my entire strategy around it, and it turns out you never even teched it…

GL in the rest of the tourny!

I played hard with Lich’s Bargain in the last game so I was expecting you to expect it. I played with Geiger and delayed tech 1, teching two copies of Now! to ensure I get with the plan of playing it on Jandra or Poisonblade Rogue which can throw off a patrol plan by getting rid of the SQL. Obviously it didn’t work because Geiger never survived and I’m not sure it was a great plan but there you go. I got to kill Cal early on which was good and I considered using Geiger’s max on a wounded Jandra after she attacks so I thought it would give me options. I also like Now! on Argo or BC when Lobbers are around for lots of pressure, especially with Graveyard but none of these plans materialized.

in ur shoes i would have gone down on cards to get rid of drakk. Lobber, lobber kills ramba, maxgeiger flicker lobber, now on geiger, both kill draak. or did i miss something?

If you mean the last turn (or the one before it), tech 1 was rebuilding.
