Casual StrixVaria vs. FrozenStorm (purple vs. blue)

This is looking pretty grim. I have no way to keep you from repeatedly pinging my tech 2, and I’m sure there’s another gryphon coming within the next few turns. Without access to tech 2, I don’t have enough removal to deal with both your non-gryphon illusions and your gryphons on the same turn.

I’m going to concede here.

I’ve learned a lot this game. Your tower did a ton of work. Looking back, I’m not sure how exactly I should have dealt with it, but I should have respected it more. I learned that there are situations where you definitely should tech 2 of the same thing, if you really need that particular thing (if I had drawn Tricycloid instead of Immortal last turn, things would at least be slightly less grim).

I just read through your thoughts from the game. Unphase was a mistake, obviously. For some reason I thought the first attacker per turn is detected even if it’s not invisible, and that a second invisible attacker would get through. Later on, I realized my mistake. KotC was also a terrible tech; I can’t give a good explanation for that one.

GG WP! I think you are right to concede here, blocking your Now! and your Tech2 means I take away your primary economic sources of targeting and immediate board swing.

The main two things I think you should have done differently are:

  1. Not tech Unphase or Knight of the Conclave (KotC).
  • Unphase early is pretty situational to get a surprise backline kill, and only against an opponent who has not built a tower. I had a tower from turn 2, and by the time you teched KotC / Unphase plenty of room to get my truth tech 2 working, so there was little chance you were going to get the tower down before you could play it. Two gold (four if you include bringing out Vir) and a card to kill one illusion isn’t a great trade either.
  • KotC is really slow to develop, and thus pretty situational: while it costs no gold, a card is a heavy cost to pay early game for something you realistically won’t even patrol with until 2 turns after it leaves your hand. If you had gone Seer / KotC first tech, and tried to keep a Tinkerer up behind a patrolling Plasmodium, that might have turned into a potent timing attack for around turn 5, but it’s a long shot. KotC is generally not great and rarely teched by competitive players.
  1. Build a tech 2 on turn 4 instead of a tower. At that point you had seen that I was tech 2 truth, and Truth units are chunky enough that a tower won’t really deter them from attacking. I had very little threat on the board to swing at you, and you have a solid answer to truth at tech 2 in Tricycloid. And with levels already on Geiger, you have the gold to play Tricycloid, shoot down a backline Macciatus, maxband Geiger to refresh Tricycloid, spin down up to three Illusions, and leave yourself tons of room to run rampant on me.

The choice to kill Oni or Tech 2 on turn 4 wasn’t an obvious one. Probably better to take the tech 2 in that situation as there isn’t an Oni spell you’re super concerned I’ll play and you get a good trade out of origin story if I max him out. But seeing as you hadn’t pre-teched Origin Story, I definitely would have had the opportunity to do some damage with Oni. Killing Oni was an objectively good econ advantage for you gaining the free levels on Max. I 100% should have patrolled him in Scavenger, that was a misplay on my part.

My other bad mistake was teching Spectral Roc on turn 3: you never saw it b/c it was not a practical choice at all. Another Macciatus or a Reteller was an objectively better idea, as I was going to be short for gold a bit and would not be able to get both the Roc and Macciatus down in time to protect against tricycloids. Even Injunction or Community Service would have been better.

Happy to play another game of this matchup, switching sides or not, or play another matchup if you like, overall you brought solid aggression at me those first few turns and clearly were thoughtful about your moves!

Okay sweet, I’ll play blue again so you can learn from the previous game ( andpartly because I’m determined to understand Blue better, I want to win a game as Blue P2 vs Black with my brother, we are concerned that matchup is too hard for blue). I’ve found I only got better with a particular deck after I played ~5 games of a particular matchup.

Of course it does, whoops. I’m still adjusting to this format. Keeping everything in my head is hard, especially in a game with this many moving pieces!

Mistakes get made all the time with this game, be it PbP or playing IRL. I played someone IRL on Wednesday and we played Black vs Blue and completely neglected that Twilight Baron disallows tech 2 and 3 units for its owner. Baron was side by side with Voidblocker and Zzaramonde, wrecking stuff :wink:

Thoughts

I have absolutely no idea what to tech this turn. I guess defenses? Stewardess of the Undone is still a decent/cheap body even if her effect fizzles. I can’t get Tech II stuff out next turn even if I build the Tech II building, so getting Battle Suits out seems ok in case I get Hyperion later.

I’m tired of the Brave Knight. I could kill either Bigby or Flagstone Garrison or Tech I or Tech II. They’re all real threats. I honestly don’t know what the right play is, so I’m second guessing everything right now. This game isn’t as out of hand as I thought it was, but I’m still not well off.

Your base is at 18, not 20. Also, I’m glad that killing Tech I inhibited some plans, because I had to pick 1 of 4 possible targets and had no idea which was the biggest threat :stuck_out_tongue:

Thoughts

I’m actually building up a bit of a board. I’m a little sad that I didn’t get Now! in hand next turn, but I could hope to draw it with Max’s midband (or if Xenostalker somehow dies, but I think I’d rather him survive than get a chance to draw Now!). I have one of each tech level on patrol because I’m expecting Injunction. If he has both Arrest and Injunction, no amount of patrolling I do here is going to block everything. I know he’s about to flood the board with dudes, but none of them have haste, and he doesn’t have illusions for pseudo-haste with Quince, so hopefully I have some kind of play next turn.
