Casual: HolyTispon (mono-White) vs. Jadiel (Mono-blue)

This feels horrible - I felt like there were no not awful lines that turn - guess I screwed up on T1 somehow…

It’s that my line was horrible if you drew the card that you didn’t draw. Because you were unlucky, I’m ahead, but it wasn’t a good bet by any stretch of the imagination. I think it was the best one I had, but I wasn’t anticipating this position going into T4, so in hindsight I perhaps should have taken a different line…

GG. And here I thought I have a chance. There was a moment there where I was doing ok.

Question: As far as I can tell, the way people have been playing it in the forums - a unit that is brought back by Remember during the upkeep does not fade during the upkeep where she arrives. That makes sense to me and otherwise Remember would suck but I can’t seem to square it with the rules. If it’s still the upkeep when I remove the rune from Remember and bring the Golgort, why doesn’t the Golgort also fade?

During your upkeep, the game basically has a step where it says ‘All upkeep abilities (including Fading) trigger now’. This adds all those abilities to the queue. As the active player, you can choose what order to resolve them in. If Rememberer’s upkeep ability brings another Fading unit back from the discard pile, it doesn’t Fade, because it wasn’t in play when the game triggered upkeep abilities.

I actually made a huge misplay that last turn, and I think it would have won you the game. I think you play:

Rebuild Tech II
Seers trade with Brave Knight, he returns to hand
Rememberer #1 trades with Hound, I draw
Rememberer #2 kills Bigby, I get 1g, Geiger to max level, flicker Rememberer #2
Geiger suicides into Golgort
Maxband Prynn, trash both Gryphons, killing them and Prynn.

You have 2g left, you can play a unit if you have one, or summon Vir. I have only Golgort left in play, and both my Tech IIIs are stuck in my discard pile. I don’t think there’s anyway I can stop you reestablishing the Past engine on your next upkeep, and it’s probably GG for me, as I don’t have much in the way of Tech II units either…

My mistake was playing Community Service. It’s one of those cards which really sucks you in. I’m not sure teching it was the right play at all, especially as Seers told me you were likely to go Past. Injunction (or a Tech II Truth unit) would have been a much better option. I should have summoned Quince and Oni (or Quince and an extra Mirror), as that keeps my Gryphons safe I think, unless you have double Now! in hand.

If you’re enjoying the matchup, would you be willing to play it as part of @Frozenstorm’s Monocolor Matchup Madness? I’m happy to keep playing Blue, but it is a big commitment, and I don’t know how much you are enjoying playing Purple.

Yes, I’d love to play this match-up. In fact, I signed up thinking I should continue to do purple vs. blue because I don’t have as much experience with any of the others, I’m really enjoying purple and I feel like I can probably get better if I focus on one match-up.

I’m kind of shocked I still had a chance! I’m bummed I conceded. Should have stuck through it. I usually do, actually. But I probably wouldn’t have figured out the optimal play. Why would the Gryphons die, by the way? Wouldn’t they just come back to play if Prynn is gone?

Also, as for the upkeep rule - that makes sense but I haven’t seen this as a ruling anywhere. Did I miss it somewhere?

And thanks for the game! this was my best one so far.

oh right, as illusions they’ll die. What a play!

Anyway, I’m happy to do the match-up and I’m sure I’ll get better with time but it’s probably going to be a bit skewed because you clearly know what you’re doing and I just started playing the game.

I think you overestimate my expertise. The game hasn’t been out that long, and I’ve no experience playing Blue outside of these games. Anyway, I think it’s my turn to go first (unless you want to), so I’ll start a new thread for MMM warmups.

One comment I’ll make is that sticking with the same matchup helps to learn more about that matchup, whereas playing as and/or against other colors helps you learn more about the game overall. Neither is inherently better, but it’s something new players should keep in mind.

I started a new thread for warm-ups before our series. I’m going to use the first post in the thread to keep notes on starter deck cards, Tech I units, spells and Tech II choices. If you want to do the same, then feel free to make a post in the thread now. Otherwise, you can either start the first game in that thread if you want to go first, or let me know here and I’ll start

Thanks @Hobusu - I’ll be playing other match-up with the actual cards, and though I like forum play it’s a bit challenging to have to look up cards all the time and so I feel like it’ll be a good introduction and way to get better by focusing, for a start, on one match-up.

Is this a ruling you’ve seen somewhere or is this your interpretation?
