Your thoughts were spot on in terms of the awkward choice regarding Grave. Didn’t know what to do with him and both option seemed bad.
It did seem to me like you were thinking of birds so I didn’t tech them though going doing on cards really hurt and my deck was so big no cards made any difference.

You got into trouble on T2 by playing Flagbearer, which lost $1 in value straight away to StW and allowed Orpal to place the runes on Grave. With the White starter, it’s almost always going badly if you’re playing Flagbearer, Fox Primus or Fox Viper on move 1 or 2. They each cost ~$1 more than their stats justify, which makes quite a difference early on when cash is so limited.

You’d have been just fine killing Javelineer with Grave (sparkshot 1 to Orpal), levelling Grave to mid, playing Aged Sensei and building Tech 1.

I had a similar thought later that day after I had made my move. Alas, it was done and done.
