Thoughts

Pretty obnoxious starting hand here, whatever goes down is safe but needs to deal with a high-health SQL blocker (e.g. Rook) or Garth + skeleton on Turn 2. With Rampant Growth in this hand, and no 1-cost units, I think my best best is Ironbark Treant, and hope the ““threat”” of a Growthed Treant dissuades zhavier from playing Rook.

Thoughts

No way I can kill the Newsman this turn, but the only way zhavier can kill something is if he uses Manufactured Truth on it. If I damage it now, the only unit it could be turned into without it immediately dying is Porkhand Magistrate, and I’d be very surprised if zhavier would bother playing that.

I’d usually want Bird’s Nest here. Tiny Basilisk is the obvious choice for dealing with Garth or Rook, Crash Bomber or Thunderclap would be nice to deal with illusion/skeleton spam.

There are two basic plans I have for this deck. i) Mimics, obviously, backed up by Birds for flying and Drakk’s maxband / Bloodlust for haste. ii) Strength for Barbarbarians/Colossi backed up by Bloodlust for attack/haste, respectively. What about zhavier’s deck? I’m expecting Necromancy, backed up with spells from Quince and Rook. In that case, Strength might also be good for DeGrey. In which case I don’t necessarily need the birds, and I can focus on Midori and Drakk instead.

Luxury options: Tech Lab for Bugblatter and DeGrey, maybe plus Final Showdown too, would be nice if I could afford it. Also, maybe Morningstar Pass could make Rickety Mine sort of viable later on? That’s probably more for when I’m player 2.

Putting in Basilisk and Crash Bomber for now, until I can deal with that Newsman.

Thoughts

Options:

  1. Drakk Ramhord at midband, Treant and Panda kill Quince and Bone Collector, Drakk hits maxband, Wisp kills the Newsman! Left with 3/4 Drakk, a 0/1 Wisp, and a 2/1 Panda.
  2. Spore Shambler, pay one to let Treant trade with Bone Collector. Last gold for killing Quince with Panda. Left with two 0/1s to clock and a 3/2 Panda.
  3. Young Basilisk, and 3 gold for something.

Let’s get Drakk out and take that Newsman out. I’m tempted to take War Drums here, but Garth can just come out with a Doom Grasp, better not.

Still feeling confident about going for Strength here, most of Necromancy’s units have 3 health, with a few at 4, so I don’t need Blood’s high-attack values here. Birds could be a problem, but I can pull out DeGrey or Nature Reclaims so they don’t matter, and my Barbarians will get more boosts from Drakk. Putting in a Crash Bomber rather than Kidnapping, I don’t think I need it to deal with Tech I, and I think I deal with one Lich’s Bargain OK.

I think the only way I take damage here is if Manufactured Truth is expensively played on the Illusion. Could be a Bone Collector coming my way, in that case, so putting Drakk in Squad Leader to soak up some of that damage.

… Drawing both my green spells after killing the Newsman? Sounds good. Drakk’s maxband haste going on a Tiny Basilisk could be nice.

EDIT: hell, he might be going for Lich’s Bargain + Morningstar Pass. I need to get to Tech II first for DeGrey and Barbarbarian, or there might be a quick reversal of fortunes.

  2. As above, then Rampant Growth Drakk to kill Tech I, rather than build Tech II.

zhavier’s already given up the initiative on building Tech II first, so I don’t see the need for option 2 here.

Hmm, not quite enough gold to play everything! I’ve got a choice between bringing out both Barbarbarians, or skipping one in favour of killing zhavier’s Barbarbarian with a Bloodlusted Tiny Basilisk. I see no reason not to do the latter.

Putting in a Colossus, since hasting one puts zhavier on a one-turn clock.

I think I’m only at threat from Manufactured Truth and Bone Collector coming out again, so this patrol should be enough unless zhavier pulls out a Death Rites.

Thoughts

Putting in another DeGrey in case of Lich’s Bargain coming out again, and a Vines for sidelining big patrollers and to give me options if Newsman blocks 2-cost spells.

zhavier’s response was what I was afraid of. It worked out at a gold disadvantage for him, though, when he’s already 2 income behind, hopefully that’ll count for more than the card draw. Hopefully my income difference will start to tell soon, and I won’t have to resort to bringing in Crashbarrows.

I think my best option here is to maxband Drakk, which leaves 5 gold to bring out something to take out Quince. No way I can kill both heroes this turn, unfortunately, so I’ll spend 3 gold to kill Quince with Drakk and DeGrey, and 2 gold to block with Rook. Hopefully, I’ll quickly redraw into something useful.

… If Drakk survives, this is a great hand. I might be able to save gold for a worker, or for a later Colossus or Tech III.

EDIT: Oh, boy, Morningstar Pass + Lich’s Bargain. Crash Bombers should help clear that, but I hope I draw into my other copy of DeGrey soon.

Thoughts

I could put the Tiny Basilisk down as well here in case zhavier blocks up with Rook, but I’d rather have the larger hand to try to draw into Morningstar Pass.
