Thoughts

Pretty good hand to get Imped on T1, since I probably would have made this play anyway. I’ll see what he does, but next turn I could go for a skeleton flood with Summon Skeletons + Garth startband. If I do that, I might want to build Heroes’ Hall instead of Tech I so I can threaten midband Drakk the following turn for the early pressure, and maybe grab Lich’s Bargain too.

Thoughts

Have 4 skeletons up, but decided against the all-in of doing Heroes’ Hall over Tech I. If I really want Drakk I can try to suicide Garth. But this play keeps more options open. If he lets my skeletons live again I could have a very nice chance to get Archery up next turn.

Okay, so time for some thoughts, here:

Thoughts

This is only my 8th game of Codex and only my third game the Blackhand Scourge (or in fact, any non-starter faction). So, I don’t set my expectations for wining too high.

My initial thought was that there is a lot of Skeletons coming out. So I wanted to get some sparkshot in (Crypt Crawler) and also I need some way to control the amount of Skeletons. I’m a bit afraid there might be some form of sacrifice Skeletons to accelerate tech III.

I also did not want to counter Skeletons with Skeletons, so I will try to control them with Disease. Especially Orpal Gloor’s max-band should help. Put -1/-1 on a single Skeleton and have two others die at the same time.

My serious concern is the amount of Technician/Scavenger bonuses he will reap with those Skeletons. Maybe I can build up an engine to spring all at once to get rid of these Skeletons there.

Graveyard will help me keep the deck thin to get to my teched cards (exactly none drawn on turn three, curse you!) and play that Thieving Imp more often to keep his hand down. Though, is that even necessary with all the Skeleton galore?

Thoughts

He’s not putting too much pressure on me, so going for Blood Tech II to threaten a big blitz with Crashbarrows. Bloodlust to pick off any 1 health guys and to potentially get hasted Lich’s Bargain Horror or Bone Collector.

Next turn I can Graveyard + max Garth --> Crashbarrow for 6 gold (and threaten to replay it next turn), or I could bring out midband Drakk for 5 and boost my skeletal archers. He didn’t reshuffle Deteriorate, so I think the only way he could kill Garth next turn is hero + Sac the Weak + swing with Imp. That’s 4 gold for him and I’m fine with that. Especially because the Scavenger bonus means I could afford Max Drakk + hasted Bone Collector. That would mean skipping a worker, but I think it would be worth it for all that tasty pressure.

So, I need to control these Skeletons. I teched Abomination and Plague Lab, both should work great against them. Especially Abomination.

I was really torn between playing Bone Collector (for irritation) or Crypt Crawler instead of building Tech II, but I was kind of desperate and with the Tower in place, there’s not much worrying about Skeletons for now. And Gargoyle can defend rather nicely in Squad Leader against his board.

Though I am not sure what spells or Blood haste units might come my way.

I have a bad feeling about this. :worried:

Thoughts

When I got the email update of your/his turn, my first thought was: now I’m screwed. Might as well call it a day. Though, losing is a learning experience, so I really should go through with it.

I had really high hopes of playing Abomination this turn and finally try to get some footing. No Abo without tech 2, though. That was kind of crushing. Crashbarrow out of nowhere.

After this massive plan-crushing, I was happy to at least bring Orpal back to life. Plus, I had two nice -1/-1 spells. Combined with Orpals max, that makes for three such spells.

I sacrificed economy, but at least I was able to almost wipe his board. Though I am really sad that there was no way for me to get rid of Garth. Maybe next turn I can get an Abo out, abolishing the Skeleton shenanigans for good. All these dreams. I feel pathetic.

Thoughts

Seems like he teched disease spells first cycle to deal with my skeletons, but he couldn’t get them lined up to play until now. Well it worked this time around.

Disease Tech II doesn’t have any haste, so I don’t see a way for him to kill my Graveyard or Tech II next turn. That’s at least 1 Crashbarrow, and unless he hits a 1/5 discard chance with Imp I can get the other Crashbarrow down as well. That should be enough to wipe out whatever he throws down, and either go for base damage or take down his Tech II again. Cursed Crow could be a problem, but that’s why I teched a Shoddy Glider.

When Crashbarrow died, he had -1 runes on him from Orpals topband, and triggered orpals maxband, which is to say, he put -1 runes on two other units, chosen by the active player.

Oh you’re right. In this case I can just reorder to kill Orpal first and then summon BC and the skeleton afterwards, which means I have no other units in play and the maxband fizzles.

Wow, congratulations. I was scrambling to get my feet on the ground since your second turn. And I am still unsure how I should counter your Gravebarrow. Or is it Crashyard. Both seem appropriate.

Yeah, Crashbarrow + Graveyard is quite potent, especially if you can cheat out the Crashbarrow early with Garth. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that 3 of the decks in this tournament are [Necro]/Blood/x. I also had a bit of fortunate luck in how the draws lined up - Summon Skeletons on T2, Skeletal Archery on T3, and Graveyard on T4 were all exactly what I wanted, when I wanted them.

One counter strategy that gives me problems is just putting a lot of pressure on the board. Maxbanding Garth + Graveyard + Crashbarrow is a whole bunch of gold for stuff that I can’t or don’t want to patrol. I can usually only afford weak chumps like skeletons as patrollers, and maybe a Bone Collector if I’m lucky. If my opponent can get some solid early board pressure, it makes it hard to go that route without putting myself at substantial risk.
