[details=Thoughts]Okay, here’s another matchup I can spend scared of Kidnapping for the whole game, no matter if it is actually in play or not.

Looking back at zhavier’s previous games he seems to favor a Blood based approach supported by varying Tech I choices and the very nice and flexible spell lineup that his spec combination offers.
I expect him to go Blood again this game, as Growth is quite good for dealing with Truth.

I have considerable problems coming up with a good response to this board.

My first instict of Tiger Cub + Arg dies to StW and leaves him so far ahead, we might as well stop playing right there. Tiger Cub + Playful Panda has the same problem.

The only thing I can come up with that doesn’t die to this board if he has StW is a 3/4 hero in Squad Lead (he doesn’t have the 6 gold for Drakk midband as P1, otherwise I’d consider this opening close to unbeatable). Thankfully I have Forest’s Favor in hand so I can use that instead of midbanding Calamandra. I should be able to pick up a good trade with Calamandra in the near future, but I shouldn’t rely too much on her as it also makes her a very juicy Doom Grasp target.

A likely response is Jandra in Squad Lead while building a board with Drakk or Garth.

Thoughts

That is a good counter to my opening… Most likely Jandra dies to Cala and he plays a blocker. I can live with that. I am probably going to have to figure out what to do about Midori later on, as it is pretty obvious I favor Blood in this deck lineup. Most likely he will go balance or growth and I will have to play a bit of catchup. My next turn I am going to have to grab Doom Grasp to deal with Midori or Calamandra. I could kill Cala now and skip a worker, but that puts me so far behind on making my tech 2 its probably a losing position against growth. On the flipside, it gives me a Maxband Drakk…

I could switch things up and try a token spam with Lich’s Bargain… Let’s see how that goes, see If I can apply some serious pressure with frenzy and deathtouch

[details=Thoughts]Not sure if my Tech choices do anything, but the same arguments as I used against monoblack and monored apply here as well: I cannot afford to lose a Centaur to StW or get it kidnapped, Tiny Basilisk & Ferocity do nothing against black if he can easily reduce the ATK to 0.

I considered stealthing Calamandra to kill Garth, but decided against going down on cards. If i read the board right, he shouldn’t be able to kill Calamandra unless he drew into a Doom Grasp. However, he cannot Worker, make a Skeleton, Doom Grasp and build Tech I with only 7 gold, so I might be safe, maybe? I think I can recover if he has to sacrifice Jandra?[/details]

This costs 1 gold because Merfolk Propsector has Resist 1 from Calamandra’s Midband, who is still alive at that point.

[details=Thoughts]Okay, I knew he could get Calamandra if he traded in Garth, but I did not expect Lich’s Bargain at all… We’ll see if the P2 economy advantage is enough to carry me out of this mess.

With Calamandra being dead, I’m not really sure what my tech choice should be and I’m simply choosing the most standard thing I can think of. Maybe Moment’s Peace might be a good idea to survive this onslaught? But Midori does nothing to help me this turn.

So I’ll just bring out lots and lots of blockers, hoping that will buy me some time. Hopefully I can build Tech II next turn.[/details]

I am certain you discarded 2, not 4, so you are going to need to redraw the 1 card post reshuffle and make sure playful panda is marked in play and didn’t get shuffled back in.

OBJECTION: The 3/3 horror created by Lich’s Bargain has Deathtouch – anything that takes any amount of damage from it, even to armor, will die.

I didn’t expect Lich’s Bargain at all. Definitely have to figure out how to properly respond to this.

He had another Lich’s Bargain in hand that turn. If he’d wanted the more dramatic win, he could have played it instead of workering and having Garth make a skeleton, and really trashed your base. That was impressive, @zhavier!

I try not to go for overkill, but yes, I did see that line after I had found the line I used.

I will also say not patrolling calamandra was a mistake, as it could have delayed me. And I was at least a little lucky in getting one of the 2 war drums that turn instead of having to wait until next turn, but the hasted Bone Collector was guaranteed, so it was at least likely I could clear your board.

Best answer would ahve been moments peace a lot sooner, as it forces me to Doom Grasp Midori in order to get anything done, which can really slow me down.
